David E. Reese is General Manager of KUNV radio and Affiliate Assistant Professor in the Greenspun School of Journalism and Media Studies in the College of Urban Affairs at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV). Previously he was Adjunct Professor and Director of WJCU at John Carroll University, Cleveland, Ohio. Prior to entering the academic field he worked in commercial radio in positions ranging from announcer to account executive to general manager. He is the author of many articles on college radio and, with Professor Lynne S. Gross, author of Radio Production Worktext (Focal Press).
Dr. Lynne S. Gross has taught radio and television production at a number of universities in both the United States and abroad. She has published 11 books and numerous articles which have appeared in Billboard, Radio Ink, Feedback and the Journal of College Radio. Dr. Gross has served as President of the Broadcast Education Association and was awarded its Distinguished Education Service Award in 1997. Professionally, she worked as Director of Programming for Valley Cable TV and has produced hundreds of radio and television programs.
Brian Gross, MFA, is a multimedia and Internet developer, critically-acclaimed composer, visual artist and published writer. He has been a Professor in the Radio, Television and Film, as well as the Communications departments at California State University at Fullerton, and has developed community-based initiatives to reach at-risk youth through new media. Always liked it

I have used the 6th edition and 4th edition of this book in previous audio production classes and have found it to be the best basic audio production book since the old O'Donnell "Modern Radio Production" went out of print. Its good for learning more about basic production skills and the enclosed CD provides a lot of good samples and exercises.

About the only hangup is that the book is quite dated, particularly in the chapters on new tech and internet production - but its not a killer short-coming. If anything, the examples of web sites and editing software show the book's age, but that's it. Everything else in here is top-notch.

The good news - a seventh edition is planned for publication sometime in 2013 - so these shortcomings should be corrected. That's a good thing, because it will just make a very strong book even better.

A Good Introductory Text

Selecting a text for an undergraduate audio production class is a dicey proposition. There are a limited number in print, and some are commercial-focused, while other skew towards documentary, video, or music. Technical scope is another issue. Some read like pure technology primers while others simply skip over the physics smarts one needs to understand why audio tools work the way they do. And currency is always an issue, so regular updates are a must.

Whether someone creates content for broadcast, web, or power point presentations, good AV skills are an essential communication competency. This book works well in providing an up-to-date generalist's guide
to producing decent quality audio. It also includes key topics like copyright and ethics, which are useful in making the point to novices that just because you CAN do something doesn't mean its OK to do so.

The self tests and step-by-step exercises are useful in reinforcing concepts by matching them with ears-on learning. An enclosed CD lets anyone with a pc and speakers begin to make the kinds of intellectual and auditory correlations needed to make a lasting impression.

As someone who teaches audio at the undergraduate level, I've used several texts over the last 4 years, and am pleased (and relieved) to say that the 6th edition of APW is the book I'll be moving on to in the coming academic year.

Can't understand the 5-star reviews here, this was a huge disappointment

The 5-star reviews here mystify me. I found Peggy Klaus's book "Brag!" to be borderline unreadable and completely unhelpful.

It had a great title/subtitle and stellar Amazon reviews, so I figured this would be the book to help overcome my natural reluctance to tout my own achievements. Instead we have a supposed "communications expert" -- who readily admits that she feels like a fraud because she's not really a communications expert -- giving us commonsense advice that can be distilled into about five sentences. For example, the "12 Tooting Tips for Bragging" she ends the book with look like something anyone would come up with in 10 minutes when tasked with creating such a list: "Have a sense of humor" and "Use it all: your eyes, ears, head and heart" and "Know when to toot" and "Think about to whom you are tooting." OK...

The rest of the book is similar: full of trite observations and sweeping generalizations that sound like they were written by someone with not much corporate experience. Like "People on all rungs of the corporate ladder -- from entry level to middle manager, from heads of divisions to heads of companies, from Silicon Valley to Wall Street -- had a hard time talking about themselves." Heads of Silicon Valley and Wall Street companies have a hard time talking about themselves? If you find that sentence credible, then buy this book, because there are lots of others like it in here.

Don't brag too much, but let people know your accomplishments when it matters, and tell it in a quick story they'll remember. That's what this book takes 200 pages to say. I've never seen such an obviously bad book get such high ratings on Amazon.

Excellent Read - Good Tips to Keep Your Accomplishments in Front of People

While Peggy wrote this book primarily for women, as a man I got some valuable tips on how to promote myself. She encourages all of us to have a "brag bag" of sound bites available whenever anyone asks - "So what have you been up to lately". It truly is not bragging to simply tell people what you have done. One point that hit home was the concept of "credit theft" in organizations. If you aren't telling lots of people what you have accomplished, then there is a high probability that someone else will take credit for it.

It is hard to keep perspective on what you have done. You may think that you are just doing your job. Peggy gives a way to keep a log of what you have done so you can tap into the brag bag when you need it. If you just take a look once a week or once a month, you would be surprised at how much you did.

At first her terms "brag bag", "brag bites", "bragologue" and "brag nags" seem contrived and self serving so she could make her point. However, after the first several chapters, these terms really come to life and help you focus on getting your message across to everyone you meet.

This book is an easy read. I found myself going quickly through her material and picking it up again a few months later when I needed a refresher. I'm using it now to help me with my performance review.

A four letter word we must all be prepared to practice and use....

The art of Brag is an essential tool. It needs to be taught early as a foundational skill in schools to build and reinforce confidence and self-esteem. As the parent of a teenager looking for her first job it is difficult to convince my daughter that her life experiences as a babysitter, summer camp counselor in training and mentor to a struggling student in an ESL program, makes her a valuable employment candidate for a 'real' job. I hope that by re-framing her volunteer positions into brag bites and bragologues she can appreciate her worthy-ness and develop a skill that will serve her well over a lifetime!

In the early days of computing, computers were mainly used for repetitive calculations. Computing machines were highly specialized for specific tasks, usually scientific, technical, or military number-crunching problems. Over the years, computers have evolved into general-purpose problem-solving machines. The invention of programmable computers opened the door for them to take over almost any work that could possibly be done electronically. Today, the computers used commercially have begun to evolve even beyond that; no longer mere problem-solving slaves, they are taking over the internal representation of entire companies. The complete hierarchical organization of a large corporation can be mapped to a data structure defined inside a computer program. This structure is called a directory.

One of the simplest examples of a company's directory is the e-mail address book exposed by a messaging system. Its entries map to employees (and possibly also to groups of employees) who are part of a company, and each entry may expose attributes that characterize the person or group it corresponds to. More elaborate directory concepts not only aggregate mail users in a flat list but also expose some of their interrelations (such as hierarchical dependencies). Most notably, this hierarchical structure is not restricted to humans only. In addition to mail recipients, a directory may contain computers, printers, system configurations, and other items that somehow interact within a company. Active Directory, part of the forthcoming Microsoft Windows 2000 operating system (formerly known as Windows NT 5), is an excellent example. Active Directory integrates the Windows NT 4 domain concept, the Internet Domain Name System (DNS), the Microsoft Exchange Directory, and even third-party services such as the Novell NetWare Directory Service (NDS) into a single paradigm.

In the past few years, the directory concept has become so important that enormous international efforts have been undertaken to standardize it. The resulting framework is known as the X.500 Directory. Following the standardization of the directory paradigm itself, mechanisms to access and control the structure of the directory have also been discussed. Today, one of the most popular approaches is the Lightweight Directory Access Protocol (LDAP). This protocol fits nicely into the widely used Internet protocol suite referred to as TCP/IP, and it's probably this relationship to the Internet, together with its power and ease of use, that has made for the popularity of LDAP.

Microsoft has announced that the next major releases of Windows NT--now called Windows 2000--and Exchange Server (code-named Platinum) will use LDAP as the core protocol of the built-in Active Directory Service (ADS).

ADS features its own object-oriented interface suite named Active Directory Service Interfaces (ADSI), with LDAP being one of its basic namespace providers. This means that you can operate the X.500-compatible parts of the Active Directory either with native LDAP or via ADSI. This book goes beyond the LDAP layer and shows in gross detail how native LDAP maps into ADSI objects, methods, and properties. Chapters 4 and 6 provide extensive ADSI sample code, culminating in the implementation of a general-purpose Active Directory browser. In Chapters 3 and 5, similar sample applications are discussed using plain LDAP, so you can compare the similarities and differences of LDAP and ADSI on a large scale. The Organization of This Book

This is a book for directory client developers working on the Win32 platform. A dramatically increasing number of programmers in this area are faced with writing software for current and forthcoming Microsoft Directory implementations: Exchange Server 5.x and Windows 2000. Therefore, in addition to two introductory chapters about the X.500 Directory and the foundations of LDAP (Chapters 1 and 2), the largest part of this book is dedicated to the main programming interfaces of those products, showing how to use them in building system software and applications.

The approach taken here is more practical than theoretical; you'll find many code snippets scattered among the sections to illustrate how things really work. As the book proceeds, the samples become increasingly large and complex. Unlike many other books on this topic, this one doesn't attempt to explain every aspect of LDAP and ADSI in equal measure. This would necessarily require breadth with depth. Instead, I focus on the features that are most frequently used in professional applications, sometimes going into great depths. Therefore, this book is not supposed to be a technical reference. Rather, it's a how-to book that aims at covering the parts of LDAP and ADSI that I think are most essential, leaving out some of the more esoteric and less frequently used features.

The book is organized into three parts. Part I ("Foundations") lays out the basic framework for the other parts. Part II ("Programming Interfaces") discusses the major interfaces available to directory application programmers, providing lots of small samples. Part III ("Reusable Samples") picks up the pieces and joins them in two nontrivial sample projects that I hope will assist you in solving many of your own LDAP and ADSI programming tasks.

The Audience of This Book

This book is written by a software developer for software developers, so it's quite technical. Programmers writing messaging and system administration applications for Microsoft Exchange Server, Windows NT, and Windows 2000 will probably benefit most.

You are expected to have basic knowledge of Win32 API programming techniques and some experience in applying them practically. I also assume that you don't know much about LDAP and ADSI except for having heard or read enough about them to suppose that they're of interest. Therefore, the book starts with extensive introductory chapters before presenting any code samples. The language used throughout this book is plain C; no C++ or MFC experience is necessary. Familiarity with other TCP/IP Internet protocols will surely help, but it isn't required.

Although the ADSI used throughout Chapters 4 and 6 take an object- oriented approach in terms of Microsoft's Component Object Model (COM), prior COM programming experience is not a requirement. Chapter 4 starts with a detailed introduction to the internals of COM, building a sound foundation that allows anyone capable of "talking C" to operate those interfaces with ease. Again, you do not need any C++ or MFC knowledge. Sample Code

The sample code provided to illustrate the programming paradigms presented in this book has been designed for Microsoft Visual C/C++ 6.0 and doesn't rely on any Microsoft runtime library code other than the standard Win32 DLLs. The code has been developed and tested on Microsoft Windows NT 4.0 SP5, but because the samples don't use specific NT features, the code will usually run on Microsoft Windows 95 and 98 as well.

The CD that accompanies this book contains all the samples as well as some additional code. The CD root contains four base directories:

_ \ldap contains the sample projects related to native LDAP programming. _ \adsi contains the sample projects based on the Active Directory Service Interfaces. _ \common contains the source code of common libraries used by some of the sample applications, as well as common header files. _ \doc contains extensive documentation on LDAP and related topics, collected here with the kind permission of the respective copyright owners.

All directories containing sample code are organized as Microsoft Visual Studio 6.0 expects them; that is, all source files are located in a directory named after the project, and the files resulting from a build reside in a subdirectory called release. You can simply copy a project directory, including its release subdirectory, to the location where you're keeping your own projects. All sample projects come with a .dsw workspace file containing the basic default settings. If you want to rebuild a sample application or library, just open the .dsw file in Visual Studio, select the active configuration (Debug or Release), and click Build\ Build or Build\Rebuild All on the main menu. LDAP and ADSI for C programmers only

While I am sure that the book is excellent, it is for C programmers only. The code examples seem to be comprehensive, however, I was expecting them to be in Visual Basic. No where in any of the book description did it mention that this book required a knowledge of C. While it may be a great book, it is not what I can use. Sorry.

a timely intro

This is a really good soup-to-nuts introduction to directory services under Microsoft. There is tons of sample code in this book, which I find very helpful. The language is C, with a MS flavor to it. There is an amazing amount of detail in this book, and the author takes great care to explain some difficult concepts. Definitely pick this one up if you are doing MS directory development.

Wow! What a great technical book!

First came a theoretical explanation then very detailed code. There are a lot of references to more detailed information on similar topics if the reader chooses to go off on a tangent on his own. This book has been a great springboard for me. The author does a great job of covering the art writing LDAP and ADSI clients separately and then bringing them together for a very nice compare and contrast.

About the Author

Dr David Lowe, Manchester Business School

David Lowe is a Senior Lecturer in Commercial Management and Head of the Project and Programme Management Affinity Group in the Innovation, Policy and Management division of MBS. He is Programme Director for the blended learning MSc in International Commercial and Contract Management and several Executive Education programmes in commercial and contract management. Clients include Rolls Royce, BAE Systems, Thales, BT, the National Skills Academy Nuclear, and the Foundation Trust Network (NHS). David is a Fellow of the Royal Institute of Chartered Surveyors, a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and an academic advisor of the International Association for Contract and Commercial Management (IACCM). His consultancy work includes benchmarking the engineering and project management provision of an international pharmaceutical company.

His teaching interests include: commercial management, commercial strategies and tactics, and contract management. Similarly his research interests focus on commercial and contract management within the context of project-based industries, ranging from ICT/telecommunications to aerospace and defence. Completed research projects include: an investigation of the cost of different procurement systems and the development of a predictive model; a project to assist medium sized construction companies develop strategic partnerships and diversify into new business opportunities offered by public and private sector clients; and an investigation into the function of commercial management in the telecommunications and construction industries. His PhD, completed at UMIST, investigated the development of professional expertise through experiential learning.

His book contributions include: Contract Management, in The Wiley Guide to Managing Projects (Wiley, 2004), and Commercial Management of Projects: Defining the Discipline (Blackwell Publishing, 2006) which he edited with Roine Leiringer. The latter is the first book to establish a theoretical framework for commercial management.

If the world was my way, every person would read this book. I am 52, a Mom, Executive, a volunteer, teacher, an athlete, and this book makes you truly FEEL the possibilities in every avenue of your life. You will not feel the same about your own potential after reading this,and the world will seem a bit brighter, no matter how
positive a perspective you have. Go for it, read the book, you won't be sorry. For
the record I am extremely busy and have read 100s of books and this is the FIRST review

Must read for sales professionals

No matter what you sell this is the book for you. I rank this right up there with Tom Hopkins' How to Master the Art of Selling and Zig Ziglar's See You at the Top. The concept is simple --- the more people you talk to, the more sucessful you will be. However, this is a different approach. The authors successfuly sell the idea that you must fall in love with the word NO. If you have been in sales for more than a few minutes, you really love YES and you don't like NO very much. What if you could learn to love hearing NO? I haven't reached that point yet but the authors have helped me stomach it better!

Life Changing Book

The philosopher Baruch Spinoza once said "to understand is to be free". This book does an phenomenal job at understanding the causes of social anxiety and presenting strategies to counteract these causes. The book states that social anxiety(shyness too) is a natural instinct based on nature and nurture, and everyone suffers from it to a certain degree(or susceptible to it). and we can overcome it by understanding it and using cognitive behavioral techniques to ultimately cancel out our socially awkward behavior.

part 1 of the book is called "understanding social anxiety", in it defines social anxiety and how it works in terms of our assumptions and beliefs.

part 2 of the book lays out several proven cognitive strategies. these strategies really do work, to me it was like dumping a base into an acid.

part 3 is sort of a "bonus" chapter to help you be more assertive, on bullying , and relaxation.

This is the best book i have EVER read on the subject. The author truly understands where social anxiety comes from and knows how painful it can be. And the best part, the author knows what to do about it. and it really DOES work.

Social Anxiety can be a VERY painful experience, we can miss out on friendships and intimate relationships, become lonely, feel unwanted and different, feel like there is something really wrong with us etc. (you are not alone)

this book can help you change all of that, and help you live your life to the fullest. You CAN live a socially rich life. You CAN live a rich romantic life. You CAN live a life that fully and harmoniously expresses who you are to the world.

i wish you the best in your journey on overcoming your barriers to harmonious human relations.

As has already been alluded to in previous reviews, the author gets it. She understands the problem completely and how we keep it going. She provides a simple yet effective strategy for change: 1)change how you think using a thought record 2)do things differently and most important think about what actually happened and how it differs from your catastrophic expectations 3)stop being self-conscious and learn to focus externally instead of on yourself 4)test and learn to change your limiting beliefs by collecting new information that disputes those beliefs. It's that simple and as effective.

This book is exactly what I needed!!! Only regret: that I didn't find it sooner

This book was exactly what I needed. It feels like I have been under this dark cloud forever and now the cloud is slowly starting to dissipate and I'm starting to feel the warmth of the sun. It makes me want to cry and laugh at the same time knowing that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. In fact I have not been able to stop smiling for the last 2 days. I don't know if I am socially phobic, but darn near! Never been diagnosed or anything, but all my life I have struggled with extreme shyness. It is so painful. But as I read through the book it gives me so many NEW ideas. And as someone who thinks a lot, I've thought this dilemma over and over and read about it, this book is so enlightening! Articles and things I've read in the past say, "don't focus on yourself so much, but focus on the other person," or "Just be positive." Others have made comments, "Just lighten up, you take everything too seriously," "Just toughen up," "Just this...Just that." The articles I read don't explain HOW, and these well-meaning people actually make you feel worse about yourself because they make it seem like "What's the big deal?" Though I've always been somewhat shy, when I was younger, I used to be pretty social. As I got older is when the social anxiety really started to kick in. I've always wondered what's wrong with me? I have tried soooo many different things to make myself "better," feeling that there is something inherently wrong with me. As I am reading this, I am just wishing I could've read this 10 yrs ago, it would have saved me so much pain and doing the wrong things to alleviate the pain, although I know this book is not near that old, still though I feel that all that anxiety is kind of melting away. I'm not even done with the book, but it's already helped me ALOT! What I've realized in reading this is that I actually am a naturally fairly Extroverted person. Though that label "Shy" was always slapped on me, I naturally want to be around people. And so that is a huge realization! The author has so much understanding and the writing is factual and to the point, no more, no less. But written in such a way that helps you understand your problem and gives you the steps to reason with yourself. About everything else I am a very rational person, and know that my thoughts about social situations are irrational, but somehow, I just couldn't change them. This book has you do mini-experiments to test your existing beliefs, and helps you get to the root of your reasoning. Absolutely wonderful. I'm fairly certain that my confidence will come back quickly, as it already has started. Buy this book if you are really struggling with social anxiety/shyness, you will be so glad you did.

I bought this book for a college level class. I am totally stoked to finally have a book that is useful beyond the class. Especially interesting are the chapters on aromatherapy and herbal medicine. This is not a waste of money, like many of my college textbooks have been!

Great read and execellent for references!

This book touches on many areas of holistic health. I had to have it for a text for my Holistic Health class but it was so good, I read it cover to cover! I will be keeping it at work for reference information to share with my clients.
