About the Author
Gabriel Campanario is a staff artist at The Seattle Times and the founder of Urban Sketchers (www.urbansketchers.org), a nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering the art of on-location drawing. Campanario's newspaper column, Seattle Sketcher, was awarded first place for blog writing in "The Best of the West" journalism contest. The blog and weekly print column, which combine location sketches and written stories, have quickly become popular in the Seattle area, where Campanario has been featured in TV and radio appearances. A native Spaniard, Campanario moved to the U.S. in 1998 and has lived near Seattle with his wife and two children since 2006. His journalism career spans two decades, working for newspapers in Barcelona, Lisbon, California, and Virginia. Showcases the love for sketching

[[VIDEOID:mo73HTQYX2GXVG]]Urban sketchers is a community of sketchers who share their sketches online. There are groups in various countries. I'm a follower of the main blog. I find it very interesting to be reading about places around the world, getting to know the streets through the eyes of people living or traveling there.

This book is 320 pages thick. For the price, it's a terrific bargain. There are over 500 sketches featured from artists all around the globe. The styles are incredibly varied, ranging from pencil sketches to watercolour paintings. Each artist has a personal style, and each sketch has a story to tell. Some of the artists are so good they should publish their own books. Gerard Michel is one of them.

There are three sections in the book. The first is the introduction on urban sketching. The second section showcases the different places drawn. That's the bulk of the book. And the third provides inspiration on where and what you can draw.

The location drawings are accompanied by artist profiles and drawing tips. This isn't an instructional book so it doesn't really cover the techniques on drawing.

I like the short stories on the sketches. Florian Afflerbach and his friends were drawing in Venice when the flood came and soak their feet. Nina Johansson documented the demolition of a public bath house, and the protest against the demolition.

Artist Joao Catarino has a sentiment that I share: Drawing everywhere is like traveling all the time. Sketching is one way to get the holiday mood all the time. I can look back at my sketches and remember vividly the places visited. I cannot say the same for travel photos I've taken. The experience is richer when you're not looking but studying a place. I wish I had started sketching earlier.

This is a fantastic book.

An inspiring way to "see the world one drawing at a time"

I have admired the sketches of author Gabriel Campanario ever since they started appearing weekly in The Seattle Times. Known as the Seattle Sketcher, Campanario takes even the most commonly photographed, iconic Seattle scenes, such as the Pike Place Market, and gives them his fresh, personal perspective that no camera can capture. I was so inspired that I became an urban sketcher myself. As I dug for more of his work on his personal blog, I was led to the local and then the international Urban Sketchers blogs (initiated by Campanario), which showed me the world "one drawing at a time" - and further compelled me to explore my city (and any city I visit) with a sketchbook. Now The Art of Urban Sketching brings to print the same types of visual expressions that I have been admiring online.

The 300-plus pages are divided into three parts. The first helps beginning sketchers gather the right tools and attitude to adopt the urban sketchers' manifesto.

The second, and largest, section, the meat of the book, compiles the work of more than a hundred artists worldwide giving us their unique urban views. It's nothing short of amazing to see the variety of styles, media and perspectives. Some sketches are casual and loose, while others are intensely detailed. Some are completed in minutes; others in many hours over the course of weeks. All are the result of careful observation and the desire of the artists to truly know a place by sketching it.

I especially enjoyed the artist profiles, their first-person anecdotes about the scenes they sketched and the photos of those artists sketching (usually standing on a street corner, sitting against a building or on a bench). I also appreciated brief technical tips the artists offered to make outdoor sketching more comfortable or make drawings more interesting, and information about how long the sketch took and media used. Some sites depicted are easily recognizable because they are widely photographed, yet the sketches are more intimate and personal than most photos. Other cities are less-often seen in the media, so these glimpses of faraway neighborhoods seem led by personal tour guides.

The third section covers themes - architecture, seasons, nighttime sketching - that urban artists are compelled to sketch. "People in Action" - my personal favorite sketching subject that I also find most challenging - includes helpful tips on how to capture movement, mood and energy when you only have a few minutes or seconds before the "model" is gone.

As a long-time wannabe sketcher, I have read and admired many books on nature sketching (Hannah Hinchman's fine work comes first to mind), but as a city dweller, I don't often or easily see the breathtaking landscapes and wildlife shown in those books. Finally, a book of sketches for the rest of us that makes it clear that the urban landscape can be as compelling, moving and ever-changing as nature. If you have any desire to capture your urban life in a sketchbook or view how others have captured theirs, you will love this book.

Good Buy for artists of all levels!

This book suits the needs of everybody who likes to draw.
It provides beginners the initial push to confront the white paper by means of simple schemes. The tips of the selected artists - more than 100 - will speed up the learning process of anyone who wants to go further.
For those who already know how to draw, the book offers a collection of themes and approaches that will really be able to "open the mind" for new horizons. Based on the urban theme, one can have a broad range of techinques and be able to combine new formulas that have proven successful.
Thanks to the personality and the spirit of the author, who made a meritocratic selection of the artists presented, the book provides valuable "solutions" for almost all problems faced by an urban sketcher while trying to accomplish his task of selecting the most important information from the urban scene depicted. This is truly useful even for the most experienced sketchers.

Useful for the American Ear

The original, U.K. version of "Queer as Folk" broke through many barriers. When I first watched the DVDs for Series 1, Parts 1-4, I had difficulty understanding the Manchester accent and some of the vocabulary. I kept replaying Vince's introductory speech until I could figure it out. The accents got easier with practice, although some characters, especially Donna, Nathan's friendly classmate, were still hard to understand. One gets the gist of it on the first pass-through, but it took more for my American ear to catch all the words. When I got the Series 2 DVD, the same issue arose. So, I checked Amazon to see if there were a QAF script available. There was; so I ordered it.
The good points: The script contains detailed staging and motivation directions. I can understand some conversations better now than before. The script contains Davies's original thoughts. There are some good color photographs inside (although none of them is risque).
The not so good points: The DVD uses a script somewhat different from what appears in the book. For example, Vince's prologue is not in the book. It would have been nice to have had additional, bracketed material to help the viewer parse out what was said on screen if it was not in the original script. The book is only for Series 1; I had been hoping for Series 1 and 2, combined. Finally, the quality of the paper in the book seems low.
Since the series has widespread popular support and since the accent issue is what kept the series off the air in the U.S., I am a bit surprised scripts were not distributed more generally in the U.S. to help potential enthusiasts feel more comfortable in knowing what was happening. Overall the book supplies extra clarity and insight into QAF.

This book is a "must have" if you like QAF!

The British series of QAF is available for purchase on VHS or
DVD. It is worth every hard-earned dollar ([and it] includes the "Making of QAF". If you are financially-
challenged at the moment, then at least purchase this book.
Do keep one thing in mind: the book is not the *exact* script
for the British TV series; actually, that makes it more
interesting because it contains all of the lines that were
removed for one reason or another. As an aside, do a Yahoo
search for the American series on VHS: it is available in a
wonderful, high-quality pirated version that has not been
cut because of time and censorship reasons. I'm much more
partial to the British version; and these scripts make it
even more rewarding.

Read the real climax of Queer as Folk as written by Davies. Better than the climax (Epi 7 & 8) as seen on Broadcast.

This book contains all 8 episodes AS WRITTEN for the series. What was written as Episode 7 and Episode 8 only exist, in PRINT in this edition. Because they were never filmed. Other scripts ideas for episode 7 and 8 were filmed instead
So This Is A Real Find if you want to see what the writer. who created QAF, really wrote as the climax to Queer as Folk.
I much prefer these two written episodes over the substitutions used for Theatrical release. The point of view in the telling is really personal at the end. Only Davies with his fixations would come up with this moving and justified ending.
I was totally satisfied.

It only takes a few seconds for you to realize that the author is affiliated with the site www.biggerpockets.com . Oh great another real estate investing guru who just so happens to funnel you into his site! But what happens when you get to the site? As I read and explored the site I realized this book is amazing and the author knows what he is talking about and actually wants to help instead of asking me to sign up for a week long crash course on making millions of dollars in real estate. Does the author say it's easy to become rich over night? No he doesn't! He shows how any average person can get involved in rental property investments. This book is one of the most comprehensive books on the topic. I would recommend this book to people who actually want to learn and get into real estate investing. This is one of the few books that is not only a good introduction but also has a ton of information for seasoned real estate investors as well. I was truly amazed and to think I almost skipped over this book because I thought it was one of those real estate scams! Great book with great information.

Invest in yourself before you invest in anything else

Great for both would-be landlords and landlords with a handful of units. If you're starting out, you should be reading everything you can get your hands on as each book will have gaps in its coverage that another book will start to fill in. This book fills in a lot of gaps that many other books don't address such as sources (other than MLS) for rentals, negotiation tips, and how important school districts and nearby amenities are to rental properties.

Another great addition to your investment toolkit. There are a TON of ways to invest in rentals. They definitely covered the details on best methods for the strategies used in investing. A lot of what goes into this is simply explaining the "black box" that is Real Estate Investing (REI). Brandon and the team break down the process step by step in an easy to digest fashion. This book is great for those who really want a window into the world investing. I would highly recommend it to those getting started as well as folks who have years of experience!

The saga goes on!

This collection contains three tales following the adventures of Ultramarines captain Uriel Ventris and Sargeant Pasanius, plus a small comic book and a short story (Eye of Vengeance).

I appreciated the first novel: The Killing Ground, for it placed our protagonist away from your typical war situation and in a far more personal (and smaller) scenario than what is common for an Adeptus Astartes. Courage and Honour, the second novel, chronicles a conflict between the Space Marines and the alien Tau in a familiar setting. While the third and final novel, The Chapter's Due shows the reader all-out war on a planetary scale between the Iron Warriors traitor legion and the Ultramarines.

The Killing Ground was my favorite, quite frankly, for the reason already mentioned. Graham McNeill's writing skills have improved considerably and he is able to deliver amazing action sequences, particularly in the battles of the second novel. The Chapter's Due is more epic in scale and follows the viewpoints of multiple characters, such as that of the Chapter Master of the Ultramarines, Marneus Calgar, and 2nd company Captain Cato Sicarius.

Reading the first Omnibus isn't mandatory but you'll be left wondering how Uriel and Pasanius came to be, so reading it first is recommended.

Veredict: A must-read for Ultramarines fans. 40k fans will have a good time.

I liked the first omnibus better!

There's not really much I can say other than I found the first omnibus more to my liking. The battle with the necrons, tyranids, and the civil war in a chaos world just seemed way more gripping than the settings in the second one. In the second omnibus, the first book's main antagonists are a bunch of ghosts trapped by one man's rage...I liked necrons better. The second book entails the attempted takeover of Pavonis by the Tau, but I think Tyranids are way more intense to read about....plus I'm one of those "heretics" who kinda like the Tau. I didn't make it to the third book, but all I can say is definitely read the first one before you read this one!!!

The Second Omnibus is even better than the first. I found the author's introduction to be spot on. He does an excellent job of building the scope of these three books, and the writing is even better. I'm very impressed with the Ultramarine series in total.

I do worry about the Captain of the 2nd Company. You can see a fall building for him.

Must, must get for a WH 40K fan. Would definitely recommend for any science fiction/military fiction fan.

Follow the trail of breadcrumbs out of the forest of ignorance

I recommend this book.

It is one of the few of its subject matter written by a man who has competed and succeeded at passing tests in international memory competitions.
He does not sugar coat the need for initial effort spent learning the systems, and does not belabor the obvious need & benefits of practice.
He does not over-complicate the systems that he does introduce.

AFTER finishing this book a little extra reading in the subject area, proved that without using the more commonly recognized terms, Mr. Horsley covered many areas of value including the "Major System" for handling the memorization of numbers based on a method of translating numbers into sounds.

I suspect that what practice reveals to some readers..(like me).. about the gaps in their understanding, will motivate them to fill those gaps and practice some more.

We all learn differently, & for this reason Mr. Horsley's book is a decent springboard from which to launch oneself into the act of mental improvement.

The "Aha" moment before I wrote this review relates to a deeper understanding of the "Journey Method".
Be sure to visit a few internet forums that discuss the practice of memory techniques and light your own lamp out of the darkness.

2015-02-23 UPDATE

There are a few points that Mr. Horsley doesn't explicitly state, that are worth mentioning.

1. The words created by the system he introduces in Chapter 12, can be used to create "Peg words" that upon creation are automatically organised in order. Create them, borrow from other people's lists if you have to and take the time to organise your source material so you rank the items/concepts to be remembered in numerical order.

2. Intimately familiarize yourself with the meaning of the word "INCONGRUOUS". It conveys in less than a sentence how to form images that "stick." (E.g. A bear with wings stuck to a honey pot")

3. After you read Chapter 9, and start trying things on your own.... WRITE DOWN your "markers" or places along the journey or "objects" within the room.
Like with anything else, that handwriting, eye, brain thing seems to add stickiness.

If you want to improve your memory... Get this book!

This book is absolutely amazing! This was the 2nd book on improving your memory I purchased (the first being Moonwalking with Einstein) and out of the 6 I have purchased Unlimited Memory is by FAR the best. Mr. Horsley gives you clear and detailed methods that “WILL” help you improve your memory. The book is VERY well written with exercise and examples of different techniques that help guide you all along the way. He also shows you/helps with examples on how you can use what you have learned earlier in the book to jump right in with both feet and start and work to improve your memory right way. I am a Programmer/DBA and am using the book to learn programming languages and complex terms and so far this book has been invaluable! This book is a winner and I 100% recommend it for anyone looking to improve your memory!

Not New or Original, Still Good

I’ve read a lot of memory books, old ones, new ones, by famous authors and experts like Harry Lorayne, Dominic O’Brien, William Walker Atkinson, Josh Foer, and many by not so famous ones, and now this one.

This book didn’t strike me as anything original or special, which is surprising given the overwhelming positive reviews. It does nothing more than take traditional memory techniques and more or less rehash them here. The presentation of the material isn’t even unique. It resembles most other books, using similar arguments, descriptions, and even cliché quotes like “if you keep doing what you’ve always done, you are going to get what you have always gotten.”

The book that kept coming to mind as I was reading this is John Parker’s Memory: Simple, Easy, and Fun Ways to Improve Memory as some of the resemblances were quite uncanny.

Both books’ introduction talk about the importance of memory and what it would be like to not have memory. Parker follows his introduction with what he refers to as “factors” that improve memory like beliefs, concentration, developing interest, letting go of stress & worry. Interestingly, Kevin follows the introduction with those same things. The words are different, but the content and message are essentially the same. The two also use cute little quotes at the beginning of each chapter and they both put a lot of emphasis on visualization and imagination.

Prior to Parker, I never really came across memory books talking about beliefs or once that put them so at the center of the memory improvement process. Also not many discussed mind maps in their books either. Sure mind maps have been taught for decades, but in “mind map” or “study skills” books, not so much in memory improvement books. It’s these elements that aren’t the focal point of many memory books, but were in Parker’s and now in Kevin’s, why I draw such a parallel.

The biggest similarity I saw to Parker’s work is in the chapter on remembering names. They both start by telling you to pay attention. They use the anecdote about how you never hear people say ‘I know the face, but I can’t remember the name.” They follow with instructions to create an image of the name; Parker uses the example of Teddy Bear & Garfield the Cat to remember Edgar while Ken uses horse & Bruce Lee to remember his last name Horsley. They suggest connecting the name to someone you already know with Parker’s example using Edgar to Edgar Allen Poe and Kevin using George to George Clooney. The list of recommendations continue with study features of the face, use the name in the conversation, talk about the name, and if these commonalities wasn’t enough, like Parker, Kevin suggests imagining the person whose name you want to remember giving you $1,000,000 next week…not tomorrow or next month, but next week.

These are some of the similarities my mind kept associating as I was reading. No doubt there are differences between the two books, but the similarities are rather interesting.

At the end of the day, this is not a bad book, which is why I still gave it three stars. If you’ve never read a memory book, you may find it helpful. But if you have, like I said it’s nothing new, original, or special. It simply regurgitates what the likes of Harry, Dominic, and Parker have already done. Yes Kevin is a memory champion, but so are many others.

About the Author

JEFFREY C. HOOKE is a Managing Director of Focus Securities, a mid-market investment bank. Previously, he led deals at the Emerging Markets Partnership, a $5 billion private equity fund, and was a Principal Investment Officer of the International Finance Corporation, the World Bank's $51 billion private sector division. Earlier, he was an investment banker with Lehman Brothers and Schroder Wertheim in New York. Hooke is a respected author and finance and investment executive with international experience.

An invaluable reference resource on the topic of M&A

This book is an invaluable resource for anyone, no matter how experienced, on either the buy or sell side of an M&A transaction or in academia. Hooke not only provides the reader a detailed step-by-step walk-through of the M&A process but also, by virtue of his broad experience, points out considerations and risks which only the most experienced M&A professionals would think of. This is the sort of book which will be referred back to repeatedly.

This is an excellent guide for a hedge fund manager seeking event opportunities in M&A situations related to publicly traded stocks. The practical applications of complex methods provide a focused approach to analysis. The author's skill in communicating this information in straight-forward language will be invaluable to professionals conducting M&A financial analysis and explaining results to relevant audiences.

Desktop reference for IBD / M&A / PE / Event-driven HFs

This new book is phenomenal. It is the updated 2nd Ed. to a book that was EXTREMELY well received back when the 1st Ed. was published. M&A and valuation is a passion of my and I have come to realize that within the practitioner world Jefferey Hooke is considered a 'de facto' authority in the same way that within academia NYU Professor Damadoran is considered the 'high priest' of valuation. The incredible factor of this book is that Mr. Hooke explains all the theory in more cogent terms than even the most revered academic YET he also provides the practical practitioner perspective which no academic textbook can. This book for me far surpasses the Valuation book written by McKinsey & Co., as that is extremely theoretically well researched yet distinctly academic in my humble opinion rather than concretely practitioner oriented. Couple key things to consider: 1) the first edition of this book had an endorsement by iconic deal maker Glenn Hutchins (of Silver Lake lore) way back when he was still at Blackstone; 2) the endorsement by John Whitehead (whom contributed so much to the investment banking practice of Goldman Sachs). Such luminary people do not provide endorsements casually or willy nilly. It is a testament to the skill level of the author himself. M&A is a space that is crowded with books mainly from academic people yet this book stands out for its rigorous treatment of both theory but much more important tangible, practical real world advice. I feel the author is truly a standout practitioner in and otherwise overcrowded space of so called middle market IBD experts. Another noteworthy fact is that his other book is considered the cornerstone seminal book to teach security analysis at U of Chicago Booth School of Business. That book truly has a cult following among top 5 MBA students most likely to work in tier one investment banks, PE funds, HFs, and all other buy-side and sell-side positions. It has reached a level of acceptance at top business schools that Graham & Dodd Security Analysis textbook has obtained within Columbia Business School students. The chapters on M&A valuation alone are worth the 'price of admission' of this book. I have read too many books on M&A and this one is one that really gets me excited. It is not only relevant for M&A but also for PE / LBO as well as event driven HF (both of which I actively engage in). Books like these allowed me to 'stand on shoulder of giants'.
