Too much filler

It was an okay book. If you're into fermentation at all then you're probably going to have seen most of the recipes already. Out of all the fermentation books I have this is probably the only one I wouldn't recommend having though honestly. Just not enough good recipes, and way too much extra sideline stuff. I bought this thinking it was more of a fermentation cookbook sort of deal, but that's really not what it is. It's pretty much just a collection of whatever the author felt like writing, circling it back around to fermentation in a roundabout way. Example, at one point the author gives a recipe, then goes on about how the recipe was given to them by a transgender and then going on a rant about gender identity. Half a page for a recipe, then a page and half of leftist pummeling. Keep in mind, I am a supporter of the LBGT community, but at the same time I don't buy a recipe book to get pummeled with propaganda. If you're looking for a light evening read, it's a good book, but if you're looking for a real fermentation cookbook with more of a professional scientific style to it, look somewhere else.

Takes us back to a better place............

I was needing to spend time in a waiting room at a hospital and took this with me, to pass the time. I actually started to read it, instead of thumbing through it. I really got what he was saying about how much we can benefit from preserving with fermentation, as in way back when before we had frig's, etc. I also was impressed with the fact that this is a healthy addition to our diets. I really do want to get back to basics and away from so much premade foods. You won't be disappointed. Also, the reviews that are complaining about his homo agenda.......... That is flat out, not the truth. These obviously are homophobic, rigid people that wrote the reviews. They obviously use any avenue to attack gays and this was just another way, trying to get people to not buy his book. He speaks of his Aids and the community he lives in but does not make that the focus, by no means. There was nothing inappropriate in this book. Many people speak of their health in food related books and the benefits of certain diets of foods. Enjoy. You won't be disappointed.

Great for anyone just starting out or wanting to go all-in, with ferments.

Good basic knowledge of fermentation using the wild yeasts (i.e. Not adding whey or starter culture to most ferments) and Sandor's storytelling is very entertaining. There are some recipes that are a tad complex for me but I look forward to trying many new things. If you are interested in this book, look for the Facebook group with the same name - lots of support and ideas!

Objective Write up

This is a well written objective account of Rommel's ability as a commander and his tactics. The book starts with a short overview of Rommel's actions in World War I. Then takes us to his command of 7 Panzer in France and going right through the creation and command of the Africa Korps and the desert campaign. And continuing with his command at Normandy in 1944. Lewin uses as his notes the Rommel Papers edited by Liddel Hart to help make his case.

The book shows us the sterling victories and defeats and what surrounded them. He does not seem to hide any facts from the reader. And gives us a truly balanced perspective of what really transpired. I was pleased to see that this first class analysis of Rommel's command abilities was presented with such honesty.

Stef Penney: You have created a tapestry of interlocking characters who all work in law enforcement in Dublin, and so far you’ve turned the spotlight on three different police officers. . . Do you have a favorite? Have you found some harder to inhabit than others?

Tana French: Frank Mackey in Faithful Place was by far the most fun to write because he’s got that dark, abrasive Dublin sense of humor that surfaces even--or especially--at life’s worst moments. The hardest to get into was Scorcher Kennedy, in my new book, Broken Harbour--I’ve just finished the edits. I think it’s to do with the gap between the way Frank saw him in Faithful Place, where he was a supporting character, and the way he sees himself. Frank sees a rule-bound, up-himself, irritating git; but from Scorcher’s point of view, he’s a man struggling desperately to do the right thing in a world where you have to trust in the rules because your own mind is too fragile and slippery to trust. There’s a huge gap between the two perspectives, and it wasn’t easy to switch. That perspective shift is one of the things I enjoy most about writing a series of books, where a secondary character in one book becomes the narrator in the next--it lets me explore the way truth can be mutable and subjective, shaped by people’s own needs as much as by objective reality--but it’s also the toughest part of it.

Penney: You’re known for writing about Dublin. Can you see yourself going anywhere else as the setting for a book?

French: I’ll be sticking with Dublin--for the foreseeable future, anyway. It’s the only city where I know all the little details--the sense of humor, the connotations of the accents, where to get a good pint and where not to go after dark. Setting a book in a place I didn’t know this intimately would feel very dislocated. I think crime is very deeply rooted in its setting--it happens everywhere but the form it takes is shaped by the fears and desires of the society where it happens--and so crime novels are rooted in setting, too. Both In the Woods and The Likeness deal with the relationship between past and present--how to balance the two without destroying either--and that’s a question that Ireland’s been struggling (and often failing) to deal with over the past twenty years. It wasn’t a deliberate choice to make the books “relevant”; it’s just that since the issue was a central part of the world I lived in while I was coming up with the books, it soaked into them. If I set a book anywhere else, that connection wouldn’t be there. Plus, I love Dublin. I care about its fears and desires with a passion that I don’t feel for any other place. Faithful Place, especially, is a love song to Dublin, its bad side as well as its good. I can’t imagine writing about somewhere I don’t care about so strongly.

Penney: The Mackeys in Faithful Place are extraordinarily vivid, but it’s a terrifying, bleak portrait of family life. Does this relate to anything in your life? Or, if not, what made you interested in writing about such a family?

French: Thank God, my family’s nothing like the Mackeys! I had an unfashionably happy childhood. But I’ve always been most interested in writing about things I don’t know about. That’s at the heart of Faithful Place, in a lot of ways. It’s about a big family, and a viciously dysfunctional one, neither of which I’ve experienced. And it’s also about a family that’s very deeply rooted in Dublin, and specifically in the centuries-old community of Faithful Place. Those roots have shaped everything the Mackeys are. I’ve always been fascinated by that kind of rooted life because it’s something I’ll never have--my parents have a handful of nationalities between them, I grew up in several continents, I’m an international brat. . . Writing about something so far from my own life is the closest I’ll ever come to understanding it.

Penney: Down to nuts and bolts: How do you write? Are you very disciplined? I imagine you must be since you’re quite prolific!

French: Hah, I wish. I’m not one of nature’s disciplined types. Back in college, I had a reputation for going into the library only to convince other people to come out for coffee, and I haven’t changed that much. Every morning, I fight the urge to call my friends and see if I can persuade anyone to come out and play. These days, though, my disciplined side almost always wins. I work six days a week, about seven hours a day. What makes the difference is that I love what I do and I feel ridiculously lucky to be doing it. After years of acting, where you’re dependent on other people to decide whether you’re allowed to work or not, being able to work every day feels like a massive gift. That considerably lessens the urge to goof off.

Penney: Any TV or film adaptations in the works? Because there should be! If yes, how did you find the experience?

French: Paramount has optioned The Likeness and In the Woods, and I’ve just heard that Likeness is in development. I’m not totally clear on exactly what that means, but it sounds very cool but slightly intimidating. I’m dying to see what comes out at the other end, but I deliberately didn’t even try to ask for any role in the adaptation process because anything I know about writing fiction is probably worthless when it comes to writing film. They’re such utterly different genres that the book’s going to have to change in ways I can’t begin to picture.

Penney: I loved the mythic quality of the backstory in In the Woods--and the fact that in the end you refused to answer the question. Did you encounter any resistance from publishers over the ending?

French: No resistance from publishers. I was expecting it, because the ending does break genre convention--I was all ready to argue my case that this was the only ending with integrity and anything else would be forced and artificial, sacrificing character truth for cheap closure. But none of the editors ever suggested changing it. I do get e-mails from readers who hate the ending. Fair enough; the genre comes with expectation of closure and the book doesn’t provide it, and some people have real trouble with that. But I also get e-mails from readers who love the ending and who would have been furious if I’d sacrificed that integrity in order to stick to the rules. There was no way I could have written something that would make both types of readers happy. All I could do was write the best book I could and hope there were enough people out there who like the same kind of thing that I do.

Informative.

For a beginner's book, I think this has been comprehensive and detailed. In fact, any newbie on Day Trading will surely get more info here. If one wishes to make it good financially and without the stress and pressures of a normal 9-6 job, this book will be able to explain more how it can be done. I was able to understand Day Trading more too. Now I have an idea that endeavor is a quick and safe way to make money by trading stocks within a day’s exchange. Informative, this is what this book is.

Well, it is given that when you invest your money into something it is guaranteed that you are also risking the money. That being said, I would recommend that you study first the investment type. This book teaches you the very basic or options trading. You will also learn how to trade options, learn the strategies, what you should do and shouldn't do, and it will introduce you to the jargons of day trading. I would say this is NOT a sophisticated book about day trading. It is simple, straightforward, it is also easy to understand. This book won't intimidate you with intricacies of day trading, save that when you already know what this is all about and you are ready to invest. The author kept it simple and informative. For beginners, this is a good book. So stay informed. Read. Study. Apply.

[NOT YOUNG ADULT] What could have been a great story, shot down by unlikable characters, dubious consent concerns, and worse.

I need to say right up front: This book is marketed as "Young Adult", and it is anything BUT. The category is defined by the themes contained within the story. Just because your main characters are all about 17-year olds, that doesn't make you a YA book. YA and I are so close we're practically family. This book was like a stranger at the dinner table.

I actually interrupted another book to read this one, and I'm still not sure why. It's not even in my normal genre preference. I just remember reading the summary, seeing the cover, and thinking "I'd like to read that." Ella Harper was an interesting main character, full of spirit, and she led her story well. The writing was even pretty decent for the first 2/3rd of the book.

Call me old-fashioned, when we decide "attempted date rape" is the best catalyst for getting the two leads to hook up, the story stops being enjoyable. Now, the male lead, Reed Royal, did not actually attempt the date rape, but when Ella is drugged and the Royal brothers save her, how is the natural conclusion "Someone is gonna need to 'help' her with her drug-induced horniness." Sorry, what? WHAT? So maybe Reed Royal didn't attempt the date rape, but he's 1000000% guilty of engaging in dubious consent.

"I feel like I'm taking advantage of you."

Yes, Reed, because you are! Ella is high on a date-rape cocktail, and you're like "Well, but she said she was okay with me 'helping' her, so..." This isn't even the only incident like this in the story. At one point Reed actually *propositions* her while they're out yachting, saying that she's a dirty whore but he'll take care of her sexual needs as long as she doesn't touch the rest of his family. Ella's second morning in the household, two of her new "brothers" joke about raping her. To Ella's credit, she does point out to the readers "Sexual assault isn't about getting laid. It's about power.", indicating they don't need to use sex to have power over her.

Ella's actually very good about playing it smart. It's something that made her extremely likeable as a character. (Up until sex was involved, and suddenly she can't think at all.) She knows a handsome face doesn't make someone a good person. Ella gets the difference between what her body wants and what her mind wants. She knows the value of education as a means to rise above poor circumstances. Ella Harper has lots of qualities that make her a great main character.

Remember when I said the writing was good for the first 2/3rds of the book and was not Young Adult? The last third of this book read like a smutty magazine you'd find under a mattress. Nevermind that Ella was smart and self-sufficient. Once she and Reed hook up, it's like sex-sex-sex all the time on her brain. She can barely look at Reed without wanting to get busy with him, and the book goes into GRAPHIC detail about their sexual encounters. Look, bedroom doors were invented for a reason. These are 17-year olds. I don't need to hear all the gory details of whose fingers are going where. ...I'm gonna say it again for good measure: SEVENTEEN-YEAR OLDS.

It's a shame that I power read through the first 2/3 so quickly because the story was engaging, yet it's the uglier remaining third that's leaving such an imprint on my mind. The first part of the book actually had a good premise, familiar but solid. Poor girl with nothing gets plucked from obscurity into a life of riches. I didn't even take issue with the idea that she was stripping when we first meet her, because she's doing it to survive. Can't fault someone for surviving, and she's smart about her work, putting her safety and schooling first. I actually had to pause around page 55 and split a side from laughing. "Four boys who rule the school, and their decree sets the law for how poor-girl Ella will be treated." I've seen this premise before, and lemme tell ya, I LOVE Hana Yori Dango. Downside? The boys in HYD weren't such *complete* a-holes, unlike the Royals, and they actually learned and grew from their experiences in the story. The only redeemable character in this bunch is Easton. He's the only one that makes up for his initial behavior and makes an attempt to be better with Ella. I see so many reviews for this story chittering on about how great all the boys are and I'm like "...Seriously?" Either their standards for men are terrible, or mine are too high. Maybe both? Easton was sweet, Gideon was neutral, and the other three were like "Please go to other side of your mansion house and never interact with Ella again, thank you."

There was ONE saving grace of the distasteful sexual content that I feel warrants a shout out. Mean Girl Savannah, one of Ella's arch nemeses, takes the time to warn her of her potential date rapist (albiet too cryptically for Ella to get it). "Look, I don't like you much, but I wouldn't let even my worst enemy be sucked in by him." She put aside all her issues with Ella to warn her. I 100% support girls looking out for other girls. More of this in the book and less of the boot knocking, and this might have been the story I hoped it was going to be.

I debated with myself at some length whether to round up or down for my site rating. The book was a solid 2.5 stars for me. The book had plenty of enjoyable material (round up), but it also had some really sketchy content (round down). Ultimately I had to ask myself "How much do I want other people reading this story? So I'm rounding down. I hate the idea of a young impressionable girl looking for a proper Young Adult book to find this one instead. Hell, I wouldn't even want a young boy to read this and get any ideas. I feel it's almost my responsibility to do what I can to discourage them both.

Good read but...

I thought this book was a good read. It has good character development, a fast moving plot, and definitely interesting characters. I liked the main character. She was strong, she wasn't perfect and she was insightful regarding how she could be influenced by her history. In fact, I liked that she was aware of her own trauma. The author definitely should have addressed this trauma more, however. It's traumatic for a 15 year old to be taking care of her sick, dying mother, to be working two jobs, to have a history of family violence (or attempted anyway), to have to deal with seeing the aftermath of domestic violence on your mom (before she was sick), to have her mother die, and to be an underage stripper on top of all of that? This brings me to my next question...How was CPS NOT called?? Oh and while we're at it, who in their right mind would believe that a 17 year old is the 35 years that a driver's license states? Nobody. Because even with a boatload of makeup on, you would look too young. But whatever. I can "suspend my disbelief".

I'm not a big fan of the amount of violence and sexual violence that happens in this book. And then to have our girl FALLING for that? I did like that she recognized how screwed up that was...but still! It just...sits wrong with me. But then maybe, because of her past, this is what she's looking for. I did like that this bad boy didn't do a complete turn around. That's wonderful, actually. I mean, we get to see what motivates him (the trauma of losing his own mother--a lot of dead mother's in this book now that I think about it) but he makes no apologies. He just sort of..warms up to our girl.

All in all I'd give it a 3.something. There were flaws but I believe that's the point of it all. Just didn't care for the violence, the dating violence, and the sexual violence.

WOW! I put this book on the back burner for a while because the synopsis just didn't grab my attention, but it had decent reviews so I put it on my wish list and waited. I finally purchased it and read the entire book in one day. I was sucked in! The plot is phenomenal!! It's so much more than a rags to riches story. The characters are so complex and well developed - they each have their own flavor and stand out independently. Ella is a spit fire! I loved her right away. Her devotion to her mother and to herself (getting a good education, supporting herself alone) makes her one of the most likable characters I've read in a long time. Her relationships with the Royal family seemed so real - I could believe that their relationships were based on real life, even though they're completely fictitious. THANK THE LORD that the second book is already out because I would have been stewing in my head until it's release!! Don't be put off by some of the other reviews like I was - this book is fantastic. Well edited, well thought out, believable, lovable - I'd give it ten stars if I could!

Super expensive, but highly inspirational

Super expensive, but highly inspirational. Almost all of the designs were new to me - I hadn't seen any of these in other books or in online showcases, so that was great. Overall, I'm happy with this book.

The best so far

I own all 6 of Los Logos and this is by far the best.
1, 2 and 3 are just a collection of plain logos. Type "logos" on google images and you will probably get a better selection.
But this one, thankfully, shows something far more creative and innovative.

The Los Logos series continues to step it up

As a graphic designer, I've found the series invaluable over the years. I own the first three books, but didn't purchase the 4th or 5th, because it felt like they were starting to get a little stale around Tres Logos - still not giving much of a context for the marks, and including many, many self-promotional marks that (aside from the book) likely never saw the light of day anyway. Los Logos 6, however, seems to stick a bit more to actual identities instead of just playful studies, which is great to see. I highly recommend this book to any graphic designers that work on corporate (or not-so-corporate) identity systems.

Shortlisted for the 2006 Man Booker Prize, Matar's debut novel tracks the effects of Libyan strongman Khadafy's 1969 September revolution on the el-Dawani family, as seen by nine-year-old Suleiman, who narrates as an adult. Living in Tripoli 10 years after the revolution with his parents and spending lazy summer days with his best friend, Kareem, Suleiman has his world turned upside down when the secret police–like Revolutionary Committee puts the family in its sights—though Suleiman does not know it, his father has spoken against the regime and is a clandestine agitator—along with families in the neighborhood. When Kareem's father is arrested as a traitor, Suleiman's own father appears to be next. The ensuing brutality resonates beyond the bloody events themselves to a brutalizing of heart and mind for all concerned. Matar renders it brilliantly, as well as zeroing in on the regime's reign of terror itself: mock trials, televised executions, neighbors informing on friends, persecution mania in those remaining. By the end, Suleiman's father must either renounce the cause or die for it, and Suleiman faces the aftermath of conflicts (including one with Kareem) that have left no one untouched. Adult/High School—This is the story of the impact of small revolutions, not on the men and women who participate in the upheavals, but on the children who barely understand the world in which they find themselves. Suleiman is a nine-year-old in Qaddafi's Libya, proud of his country and his father, and worried about his mother's "illness." He is unprepared to understand the danger his father, a believer in democracy, is in, or the role that he, just a child, must play to protect his family. What is most disturbing is that he must play the games of adults, but without knowing the rules. There is no heroism here, only fear, betrayal, and mistrust. This is a difficult book: the characters are fatally flawed, the plot revels in the gray area of a child's memories and immature perceptions, and in the end there is little redemption. The plot unfolds credibly through the boy's eyes, and it is readers who shed light on the secrets. There is no judgment, and yet there is a heavy patina of guilt in the narrative. Well written, with evocative descriptions of heat and landscape that intensify readers' experience, the story lingers long after the book is closed. Short-listed for both the 2006 Man Booker Prize for Fiction and the Guardian First Book Award, Hisham Matar's novel, widely published, raises comparisons to Khaled Hosseini's The Kite Runner (***1/2 Sept/Oct 2003). Critics agree that Matar's poetic, visual prose reflects a skill and maturity often lacking in first novels. Of the two points of view which Matar employs, the perspective of the young child narrator is effective and at times even chilling, as the baffled and terrorized Suleiman attempts to unravel the complexities of the adult world and the brutality of Libyan politics. Certainly Matar, who left Libya at age nine and whose father was also a political dissident, shares characteristics with his protagonist. The only flaw? A relatively weak conclusion.

Read Anatomy of a Disappearance instead by Matar

Matar is an extremely well educated thoughtful writer with profound ideas and a sense of poetry. His novels tend to be written in the POV of a young boy and he is incredibly successful in drawing the reader in to his writing. There is a sense of poetry and sensuality in his writing that one rarely finds today. Matar makes one think and re-examine how one lives in the world. His attention to detail is remarkable and his powers of observation eye-opening. This is clearly a debut novel. The young boy's actions and motivations are not believable and the storyline frustrates. Matar definely has worthwhile things to say and there are scenes in the novel that really work. Sadly, there are many that do not work. I found myself feeling perplexed by the actions and thoughts of his young boy narrator. At times the boy behaved as though he were younger, and at other times he behaved as though he were old and wise well beyond his years. There is a voice problem in the first novel that is missing in Anatomy of a Disappearance. I read Anatomy of a Disappearance first and was therefore disappointed by the uneven quality of In the Country of Men.

In "", Matar's style matured and he solves his "voice" issues, creating a believable character that we can empathize with. In Anatomy of a Disappearance, love in all its vicissitudes is explored. I read "Anatomy: in one day despite the slow opening (first 20 pages or so). More than anything, Matar's writing expresses a wonderful humanity. His accounts of what it is like to have a parent (disappear) explores the idea that absence can become more overpowering than presence. Read Matar. You won't regret it. But read Anatomy of a Disappearance instead. It is so much better in every way and definitely deserved the honor of Booker Short List that it received. It is a book that will stay with you.

An authentic description of Libyan traumata

I moved recently to Libya and gave the book to each of my children so they can better understand the injuries that 20+ years of Qaddhafiism have inflicted on Libya and its kind inhabitants. Memories of repression, arbitrariness, betrayal and brutality still haunt the Libyans as they are struggling to rebuild a free and inclusive State and to regain respect for themselves and for their fellow citizens. The fact that the book's narrator is a young boy makes the whole story even more haunting. His innocence is increasingly perverted by the poisonous environment that surrounds him, and he is even tempted to accept the brutality and cynicism of the oppressors as a masculine role model. In this country of men, it is ironically the boy's mother - a lady crushed by the double yoke of a male society and of a repressive State apparatus - who turns out to be the "strong" character. She paves the way to a more humane future, by instilling maternal love in a world of hate, and by eventually rescuing the boy from the grips of a totalitarian system. This too - the role of women and of victims in the reconstruction of a conflict-torn society - is an important lesson for present-day Libya.

The mind of a child portrayed by a literary master

This is an excellent novel, a work of literature. It is deceptively simple in form, content, and style, the latter a requisite since it is narrated by a 9-year-old boy. The skill of the author must be consummate to have been able to convey at one and the same time an immature and bewildered childish consciousness and sufficiently detailed (not to mention eloquent) observations of what was going on around him, and inside him, for the reader to understand it all at a mature level.

Besides simply saying well done, my main reason for writing this "review" (just a comment, really) is to draw a comparison to Martha McPhee's equally wonderful debut novel, Bright Angel Time. Although about a very different "scene" (a 1970 American road trip versus 1979 Libya) and featuring an 8-year-old girl narrator who is far more "with it" than the 9-year-old boy, McPhee's book is identical in brilliantly portraying the quick shifts of feeling and attitude ("I love her." "I hate her.") that characterize a non-fully-formed personality (and, if truth be told, probably characterize most adult consciousnesses as well).

I guess I'll add one more comparison, since this is a recent discovery for me of a genre I had no particular reason to think I would dig (having chosen each of these books because of their overt theme - the road trip, Libya, and a World War II what-if -- rather than the nature of their narrator): Philip Roth's The Plot Against America. Mine is probably very much a minority report, but this is my favorite novel of Roth's by far, and again, it is the portrayal of a child's take on the world that I found particularly masterful (although the plot and episodes of the book are also amazing in their richness).

Yet another postscript: How can I have forgotten to mention Dickens' David Copperfield? -- not only another extraordinary portrayal of the consciousness of a child (and beyond) but also just possibly my favorite novel of all time.
