About the Author

David W. Conklin is James D. Fleck Professor in International Business and a Professor of the Global Environment of Business area group at Richard Ivey School of Business. In addition he is President, Conklin and Associates, Inc., a company which undertakes research and consulting activities for private corporations and government departments and agencies on public policy issues. He has also taught in the Economics and Political Science Departments at UWO, and has been an Adjunct Professor in Social Science. He earned a BA in political science and economics from the University of Toronto and a PhD in economics from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology.

Conklin's research work focuses on the interface between corporations and public policies. This includes work for governments in the design and enforcement of legislation and regulations, as well as consulting for corporations in influencing public policies and in complying with government legislation and regulations. He has been Director, UWO Office of the Institute for Research on Public Policy, and Director of the University of Western Ontario Centre for American Studies. Over the past fifteen years, he has published over 50 articles and over 30 books.

In 2013, Dr. Kvedar launched Wellocracy, a leading source of impartial, easy-to-understand information on new personal “self-health” technologies like activity trackers, wireless devices and mobile apps to empower people to get and stay healthy.

In the crowded space of digital health where everyone competes for the loudest voice - The Internet of Healthy Things is a refreshingly balanced, informative, and easy to read book. Dr. Kvedar has been working in this space for the last 20+ years, and his book reflects that breadth of knowledge and wealth of experience. Whether a patient or caregiver seeking to learn more about digital health and the role of the Internet and technology in healthcare, a clinician seeking to understand the evolving landscape, or an entrepreneur hoping to identify opportunities and avoid risk - this book offers valuable lessons for everyone. Dr. Kvedar takes the reader from the earliest days of telehealth through the connected health of today and shows where the field is rapidly headed tomorrow. The journey is full of great examples from his work at Partner's Healthcare, his personal connections with leaders in the field, and his understanding of the complex world of healthcare policy, reimbursement, and regulation. Without giving too much away, Dr. Kvedar writes about the "holy grail" of connected health and his thoughts here are spectacular to read. This book is like a roadmap for the digital world of connected health - a world where books like this hold tremendous value!

Practical, realistic, but ground-breaking

Dr. Kvedar, famed head of the Connected Health Center at Partners, waited 20 years before presenting the deep insights they have developed into improving health care. I was particularly impressed at the practical, realistic focus on the book: it's not just a utopian view of a possible future, but a description of experiments and initiatives that are currently working, along with clear-sighted views on the barriers and challenges we face. The book is organized to be useful to entrepreneurs and managers of clinical institutions, ending each chapter with a list of insights. It also shows that numerous institutions that haven't previously thought of themselves as health care providers can make significant contributions.

An insightful examination of technology in healthcare

We can track our daily steps with Fitbits. We can remind ourselves to take our meds with apps. We can video conference with our dermatologist. But is all this technology making better doctors and healthier patients? This is what Dr. Joe Kvedar examines in this insightful book.

He shares numerous examples from his vast experience as a physician and pioneer in digital healthcare with Partners Connected Health in Boston. He delves equally deeply into the business of healthcare as he does into the behavioral habits of patients.

As someone who effectively straddles the threshold between physician-centered (think Marcus Welby) and “consumer-centric” healthcare, Kvedar has spent his career leveraging technology, from smartphones to remote health monitoring tools, to improve care delivery.

Not surprisingly, most of the examples Kvedar sites of effective “connected health” are from research conducted at Partners Connected Health. As he correctly notes, Partners was “prescient” in the healthcare landscape introducing video conferencing in the 1990s, second opinions on the internet in 2001, and texting as a tool for health messaging in 2008.

One study in particular stands out: Text2Move, which Kvedar describes as Partners’s “gold standard of what learning about your consumer means,” showed that highly personalized, targeted text messages could have a significant impact on patients’ behavior and health. It is just this type of technology that Kvedar and the researchers at Partners will continue to leverage as they relentlessly pursue effective ways to deliver care.

Kvedar devotes significant attention to the patient or “consumer” experience, in a thoughtful, complex manner. Rather than elevate or denigrate the rise of the “engaged patient” in healthcare, he examines this rise through several lenses, which will appeal equally to practicing physicians and to entrepreneurs in the healthcare field.

Ultimately, Kvedar’s message is optimistic: “The same information that could help drive healthcare costs down can be used to create highly individualized programs that will help people stay healthier and happier.”

Kvedar’s intensive examination of “connectedness” in healthcare and his lucid, easy-to-digest prose makes this a book easily consumable by readers both within and outside the healthcare industry.

About the Author
Jack Herris has a long history with aviation. His parents started dating while car-pooling together to North American Aviation during WW2. Jack’s father built P-51s, including parts for the first P-51 Mustang ever built, and his mother built B-25s. In 1971 Jack graduated Magna Cum Laude and Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Washington with a Bachelor of Science in Aeronautics and Astronautics. He then served as a Naval Aviator, flying P-3B Orion aircraft with VP-46. After leaving the navy he worked in the Laser Fusion Program at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, then worked in the high tech industry in Silicon Valley. He holds CFI, CFI-I, CFI-ME, ATP, and Learjet type ratings. Jack is a long-time member of the League of WWI Aviation Historians, and before that the Cross & Cockade Society, and has written more than a dozen articles on WWI aircraft published in their quarterly journal, Over the Front and has edited several issues of that journal. He brings additional insight into these aircraft both from his engineering and military pilot experience. In 1992 he founded Flying Machines Press to publish aviation history books and after publishing 20 titles, sold Flying Machines Press in 2000. He became a repeat offender by starting Aeronaut Books, which published its first two new aviation books around Thanksgiving 2010 and now has 30 new titles in print. About the Author

Paul Lakeland is the Aloysius P. Kelley, SJ, Professor of Catholic Studies and founding director of the Center for Catholic Studies at Fairfield University, a Jesuit institution in Connecticut. Educated at Heythrop Pontifical Athenaeum, Oxford University, the University of London, and Vanderbilt University, he has taught at Fairfield since 1981. He is the author of nine previous books, the most recent of which is A Council That Will Never End: Lumen Gentium and the Church Today (Liturgical Press, 2013). Lakeland is a member of the American Academy of Religion, the American Theological Society, the College Theology Society, and the Catholic Theological Society of America. He blogs occasionally and reviews fiction for Commonweal, a Catholic journal of opinion.

The real Church

Paul Lakeland has hit the nail on the head and driven it home. His analysis of the current situation of the Church and church is right on the money. We are a living breathing organism that reacts to the times in which we live. We are not a static entity that sucks its life from the past. The Spirit is alive within all of us and is slowly but surley pushing us forward, at times kicking and screaming. Like a new birth, it is painful for all but the new life will bring us hope. Well done.
