Amazing resource for those seeking A+ certification or anyone interested in deepening their basic computer repair skills

In books like this, there's a tricky balance between providing content and being readable/approachable.

Clarke et al have found a perfect balance. I'm an interested amateur in IT, a lot of casual experience, but not extensive. When I took the pre-test at the beginning, I was happy to find I got a high majority correct. I wondered if the book was worth it. I kept reading, and the style and approach kept pulling me along, and soon found a number of gaps in my knowledge that was quickly filled. The key for this book is certification, and so that's not just providing information about computers it is also about providing cues for what the exam requires. They have broken up subjects into easily managed chunks, with a lot of self-tests along the way that show if you've learned what you've just read or if you've skimmed a bit too quickly. This is a great manual not only for certification training but indeed a one-stop-text for anyone interested in computer servicing. There are a lot of people, after all, who aren't going to be in IT vocationally, but find themselves in the role of computer technician for a wide circle of small office needs, family, friends, and personal interest.

This offers a strong overview of Windows, with helpful guidance in MacOS and Linux. It covers up through Windows 8.1, which is one of my minor disappointments as adding Windows 10 info would keep this up to date for a while longer, though not very many businesses have switched over to Windows 10 as far as I know.

For the amount of information, readability, immediate usefulness and broad development of skills, this book is top notch. Covers software, hardware, and network issues in a focused way, never fluffy but also not too much too quicky. Highly recommend

Damaged

I disliked the product. The book cover came damaged and the binding was torn. The pages inside were torn as well. Other than the book being damaged everything else was okay. I'm not sure what happened before packaging to a new book.

So claims Michael Kater in his compelling study of music and musicians in the Third Reich, The Twisted Muse. What did it mean to compose music for Hitler and his Nazi regime? Kater asks; can artists working in a climate of oppression and fascist demagoguery dismiss their roles by claiming they created or performed for the sake of art alone? To answer these questions, Kater approaches his subject from two different angles: first, he examines the lives of musicians living under the Nazi regime--from little known musicians struggling in the orchestra pit to the great and famous, including Richard Strauss and Elisabeth Schwarzkopf. The fate of musicians in Nazi Germany is a controversial subject that has been dealt with only sparingly in the past, mostly in the course of studies of such superstars as Wilhelm Furtwangler, Herbert von Karajan, Elizabeth Schwartzkopf, Otto Klemperer and Bruno Walter. Kater, a cultural historian based at York University in Toronto, who has already written books on jazz in Nazi Germany and on how doctors fared under Hitler, has done prodigious primary research, much of it in hitherto unexamined files, to emerge with a mountain of fresh material. He does indeed discuss the well-known names-finding in most cases that their behavior falls within a gray area rather than the stark black-and-white outlines so often presented by admirers or detractors-but also examines the fate of ordinary orchestral musicians, and of journeyman soloists and composers, some of whom were never known outside the country. He writes of the Nazis' frustrating attempts to create a valid contemporary music style free of "Jewish" and jazz influences, the role serious music played in the war effort and the remarkably different routes to survival chosen by composers as unlike as Richard Strauss, Hans Pfitzner, Carl Orff and Karl Amadeus Hartmann. A work this exhaustive and extensively footnoted is obviously not for a casual reader; but anyone seriously interested in the interface of art and a peculiarly threatening political culture will find it endlessly fascinating.

This exhaustively researched book fills a conspicuous lacuna in 20th-century musicology. Kater, a Canadian researcher based at York University, presents a detailed, disturbing, but always compelling account of the musical scene in Germany during the Nazi era. Clearly and logically organized, the five chapters deal with the Nazi music bureaucracy, political compromise among music professionals, the persecuted Jewish and anti-Nazi musicians, music in educational and religious institutions, and the Nazis' concept of modernity in music and its impact on the leading composers and conductors of the time. Complex figures such as Richard Strauss and Wilhelm Furtwangler are treated thoroughly and dispassionately. Strauss emerges more sympathetically than in previous studies, while Furtwangler is shown to have been more odious in his thoughts and actions than previously believed. There is a great deal here to engage scholars and professional musicians as well as general readers interested in the study of music and ideology. Disappointing; regrettably unreliable

I went to this book for some background information on the Nazi reception of modernism in music. Unfortunately, though I found it well written, and I share Kater's mordant view of the composers and musicians who were prepared to futher their careers by going along with Nazi policies, I found that I would hesitate before I cited or applied factual claims from the book without first getting independent confirmation.

The problem is that I do know one related area reasonably well, the Nazi reception and perception of Wagner. And what Kater says there is not just wrong, but wrong in ways that I find worrying. It's not that I think that Wagner is the most important issue in relation to Third Reich cultural policies - far from it. It's just that when you find that you can't trust what a book says about a field you do know, it leaves you worried about its claims in the areas you don't know.

Three examples. First, Kater wrote, "The evidence shows that although public stagings of Wagner operas nationally had been decreasing long before the onset of the Third Reich, and even more so after 1933, in absolute figures these performances still topped the list until 1942/43, with works by such composers as Verdi, Puccini, and Strauss well behind." [page 39]

In reality "public stagings of Wagner operas nationally" increased each year before "the onset of the Third Reich", right up to the 1932/33 season, but decreased immediately and dramatically after the Nazis took power, for the 1933/34 season, and that decrease continued and accelerated during the Nazi era.

And although Wagner had invariably "topped the list" under the Weimar democracy, with hundreds more Wagner performances each year than performances of any of his nearest rivals, in reality he quickly lost that position once the Nazis seized the cultural reins. Wagner had lost first place to Verdi by the 1937/38 season, regained it (by just 18 performances) in 1938/39, and then lost by hundreds of performances in 1939/40, slipping further down the ranks in subsequent years. Some people may find that surprising, but there it is.

Second, Kater wrote of Hitler's "autobiography, which he started writing while imprisoned as Landsberg in 1924-25, naming it _Mein Kampf_, not accidentally after Richard Wagner's own _Mein Leben_."

But there are two problems with Kater's claim that the title "My Struggle" is a sort of homage to Wagner's title, "My Life". One is that all that the two titles have in common is the word "My", like "My Apprenticeship" by Maxim Gorki, "My Life", by Bill Clinton, and so on. More importantly, Hitler actually called his book _Four and a Half Years of Struggle Against Corruption, Stupidity and Lies_. The snappier title, _Mein Kampf_, was chosen by Hitler's publishers.

Still, maybe Kater misread the tables of performance numbers. Maybe he didn't know Hitler's own title for his autobiography. Still, _The Twisted Muse_ is Kater's sixth book about the Third Reich and its cultural policies. Shouldn't a specialist, whose publishing history suggests he'd been working this territory for over 20 years when this book came out, know this stuff?

Which leads to my third example, the problem of Kater's Rosenberg quote. Kater derided the evidence, cited in Frederick Spotts' _Bayreuth_ history, that the Nazi ideologue Alfred Rosenberg was hostile to Wagner. Kater's supposed clincher, proving that Rosenberg was a fervent Wagnerian, was this quotation from Rosenberg's _Myth of the Twentieth Century_: "The cultural accomplishment of Bayreuth is perennially beyond discussion."

But in Rosenberg's book this sentence is not in fact part of a eulogy to Wagner, as Kater would have you believe, but the beginning of a criticism of Wagner that dismisses his theories and much of his work, especially the _Ring_ and _Parsifal_. The actual passage, from Book II, chapter 4, goes:

"The cultural achievement of Bayreuth will remain forever beyond question. But nevertheless, today a turning away from the basic teachings of Wagner has begun, away from the assertion that dance, music and the poetic art are forever linked in the manner proclaimed by him; and away from the assertion that Bayreuth was, in fact, the unchangeable consummation of the Aryan mystery."

Could Kater have read the one sentence he cited, then instantly closed his eyes and shut the book so that he never saw the next sentence, which happened to change Rosenberg's meaning completely? It doesn't seem possible. It's difficult to see how this quotation could be anything other than deliberately deceptive.

Kater, obviously, was running a very strong agenda, in relation to Wagner. Now, it's possible that someone can get carried away because of a controversy, and be unreliable only in that area while remaining scrupulously accurate in all other areas. But my problem is, I don't know. I read an statement by Kater about the Nazi reception of modernism, and I wonder, "But is that really true? Or if it is true, is it misleadingly selected?" And I can't tell. I can't rely on it.

Fortunately, there's another book covering the same territory, that passes the test of being accurate in areas I know, and that seems academically scrupulous in the areas I don't know. That's Erik Levi's _Music in the Third Reich_, published in 1994, also available from Amazon. Levi is no more impressed by Wagner's antisemitism than Kater is, or I am, but that doesn't drive him to start making stuff up, and that's important.

Therefore Levi's _Music in the Third Reich_ is the book in this field that I cite with confidence, and that's the book that I've kept. I recommend Levi's book. Unfortunately, I can't recommend this one.

Indispensable!

Michael H. Kater's book "The Twisted Muse" is indispensable reading for any musicologist or serious music lover. The book discusses in rich detail the music and musicians of the Third Reich, a twelve year nightmare in Germany and Austria, that destroyed the creative spirit of every musician and composer living there. Mr. Kater explains the difficulty of being a musician in the Third Reich, and dramatically documents the disabling Nazi disease that infected every composer and conductor. There were no heroes, with the possible exception of Erich Kleiber who emigrated to Buenos Aires to begin a new artistic life, and Karl Amadeus Hartmann, a composer who silenced himself in Hitler's Germany and offered as much resistance to Nazism as he could. The rest were victims. or worse, perpetrators of Nazi horror. Some musicans joined the Nazi Party in order to survive and feed their families; other joined the Party to further their own careers. Knappersbusch, Furtwangler, Tietjen, von Karajan, and Boehm showed amazing duplicity toward one another, frequently acting like beasts. Cultured and well-educated Germans were sometimes reduced to the bestial level of a Goering or a Goebbles. In fact, Nazi Germany, as Mr. Kater points out, was an a veritable scorpions' nest of egomaniacal conductors and composers advancing their careers at the expense of colleagues. For example, the composer Hans Pfitzner -- one of the few serious composers the Nazis could showcase -- is particularly portrayed as an embittered, pathetic man, filled with anger and duplicity. Mr. Kater brings a new and fascinating perspective to such famous Third Reich composers as Carl Orff, Werner Egk, and Rudolf Wagner-Regeny, not evil men, but far from virtuous, who used Nazism for personal advancement. The author introduces the reader to little known German composers like Paul Graener, who suffered a particularly cruel and ignominious end; Max Trapp, a mediocre composer who wrote reams of kitsch for the Party; and George Vollerthun, a composer the Nazis needed so much that he survived a homosexual scandal in the 1930's. Mr. Kater traces the careers of these composers as well as those who left Germany --Hindemith, Schoenberg, Weill, Korngold -- with brilliant perspective. Of particular interest are the many pages devoted to the controversial Richard Strauss. Mr. Kater's thesis is that the Nazis made Strauss pay for his sins against the dictatorship by permitting Strauss's grandsons to be physically molested, by harassing Strauss's family in Garmisch, and by murdering twenty-six members of his Jewish daughter-in-law's family. Ironically, her husband, Strauss's only son, was a fervent Nazi of relatively high rank. In the final two chapters, Mr. Kater discusses the institutionalized "hausmusik" written for Nazi youth, the music for brass ensembles, and the battle music for the pagan youth festivals and SS concert bands. He also devotes intriguing sections to the Nazi's quest for a musical philosophy and a serious composer that imbued the Fascist philosophy. Mr. Kater's discussion of Hindemith as being the ideal man (modern, an "Aryan," not a twelve-tone composer) is interesting. But the Nazis never found their composer and never defined what serious Nazi music was to be. Mr. Kater documents his phenomenal study with over 1090 footnotes; sometimes a footnote will cite four or five independent sources, including letters, memories, documents, and diaries. In short, this is a magnificent study, probably the most intriguing, best written, and most comprehensive history of music in the Third Reich yet written.

Amazing

The publication quality of the book is unbelievably good. I highly recommend getting the hardcopy book and not just the Kindle version because the book is so realistic, with all the inserts such as a torn newspaper clipping, envelope, postcard, etc, being so perfect (like the newspaper clipping is actual newspaper) that it's hard not to imagine that I have Elliot's actual book in my hands.

The content is pulled together, oddly enough, by comments by Hot Carla written in the margins. Since some of us suspected there was more to Hot Carla than we got from the show, it's nice to learn more about her.

Do not read this book if you haven't at least seen most of season two or you will spoil a plot twist.

Curiouser and Curiouser, Down the Rabbit Hole We Go...

I'm normally not one to post reviews. However, after being blow away by the quality of this book, I felt the need to speak up.

As mentioned by others, the quality of this book is so great that I actually thought they sent me a special copy of the handwritten composition notebook used on set! Not only is the text authentic, but the various inserts that come with it put it over the top, blurring the lines between a manufactured book and reality.

I'm a huge fan of Mr.Robert the television show. You NEED this book if you are too.

Also, if you are a fan of the Cloverfield Franchise and have knowledge of the Alternate Reality Game that pairs with that particular franchise, this book is for you! You will feel apart of the Mr. Robert universe. Just make sure not to loose too much of a grip on reality.

Awesome stuff!

I thought it will be a boring book-like-the-movie wannabe book. Turns out it's pretty good. With some off-the-book notes and such, looks so authentic.
All the papers surfaces are flat (except for the hardcover), not it's like has been written by a pen/cils, but the inking was so good!

Day 1: Satisfied with the condition. Haven't read the story yet.

Pretty recommended for Mr. Robot fan!

It's More Than Just A Story!

"Hope Trueblood is one of several novels written by Patience Worth through Pearl Curran using the ouija board during the first part of the 20th century. The significance of this book is not the story itself. It is somewhat commonplace and sappy as storylines go; it is perhaps slow in the middle. With a little cutting here and there it would make a good Masterpiece Theatre show. Anyone wanting a good novel to read before the fire at night can find a better modern novel to entertain herself.

The book however is part of a series of novels written by Patience Worth/Pearl Curran, each of the major ones written in a different dialect of the English language. Hope Trueblood just happens to be Worth/Curran's Novel written in a language of the last half of the 19th century. It is in a style of English novels written at that time. Other novels by Worth/Curran are written in Anglo-Saxon medieval English, English of the 1600s and English not recorded to have been used at any time. This novel is much more than it appears to be on the surface when viewed within the context of all of Patience Worth's work and what she was trying to convey to people of the 20th century.

Pearl Curran had never been to England during the Victorian era nor at any other time for that matter, and yet this novel reveals intimate details of the life lived at that time in that place. When it was published and distributed in England it was accepted as a story written by an English woman, not an American who had never travelled beyond the American midwest and had not completed secondary school. This book is part of the enigma of the Patience Worth/Pearl Curran story. It is for the collector or the thinker not the consumer

Not exceptional

I actually have a first edition of this novel. It begins very strongly and in fact had me crying, but it tends to sag as the novel continues and has a somewhat standard Victorian-type ending of sacrifice and renuciation. Although I do not agree with one biographer of Patience Worth who stated her works would have been considered no better than a housemaid with pretensions except for the unusual manner in which they were written, this novel is not exceptional

unbelievably helpful guide

I was pretty lucky to find this preparation book. If you have ANY questions about the IELTS writing part of the exam - this book will answer it. It saved me a lot of time, as it literally has everything chewed up for every IELTS academic candidate. It is different from all the other books of this kind, because it actually teaches you how to answer the questions. If you are serious about improving your IELTS knowledge and skills, I recommend this book. It won't do the IELTS exam for you (just like no book does) but shows you clear steps to follow. And you can't get confused, as it teaches you everything step by step. Other books are just overloaded with useless information. This book explains how to answer the questions correctly, as it practically shows you how to nail the IELTS writing exam.

This book is the perfect tool for getting high scores. There are lots of example essays and practice questions within this book. It's a step by step kind of guide that is so informative. I don't regret buying this, it's invaluable. I just regret that I didn't get something like this before now. Nice, concise and makes a lot if sense than going thru the boring laws on the board of pharmacy Web page. I mostly red the federal book and it helped even with Oregon law. The only bid difference from federal was the record keeping in Oregon is 3 years and 2 in federal. Also the birth control law, marijuana and pseudoephedrine. But I definitely unupdated version of this and the federal book is what you need for the Oregon mpje.

I am as happy as a well-fed tyrannosaur in reading this book!

I really only bought this book because I liked Guise's Minihabits book so much. I didn't really consider myself a perfectionist, but I discovered I could use a lot more information from this book than I expected. I also was concerned this book would have too much overlapping content from Guise's Minihabits book and blog posts, but it had a lot that I hadn't seen before.
PROS: First, the structure of this book is really clear and usable. I loved that Guise didn't waste our time with a lot of "here's how to know if you're a perfectionist" drivel and instead focused on understanding perfectionism, its causes, and its solutions. In particular, I found Guise's review of the academic literature on perfectionism to be both conscientious and valuable. It does seem true that when academics are talking about perfectionism being good, they are focusing on the aspects that aren't really a focus on perfection (like "seeking excellence" or "being organized"). Guise also does a great job simplifying the categories that the academics used and adding ones of his own when needed. Next, Guise does a great job explaining how perfectionism has to be perceived as something bad if any real progress is to be made. So long as you are secretly congratulating yourself on your "flaw" of wanting everything to be perfect, you won't understand just how pervasive the problem is or be very effective in changing it. Thirdly, Guise flummoxed me by introducing new (to me) aspects of perfectionism: insisting that the context be perfect in order for you to take action ("I'm going to speak up at the meeting at work today...no, actually, Jamie's here, and he talks too much so no one will hear me...or, oh no, it's an AFTERNOON meeting this time, well, that's a loss because I'll be too tired...or, I'm sitting right next to the boss? that's too much stress, forget it; I won't speak up.") and goal size (assuming a goal has to be a "Standard American Goal"--something other people would use as a goal, a big chunk of obvious success rather than small goals of incremental progress). I didn't think I was very perfectionistic until I read about these kinds. I can see how I've fallen into these perfectionisms time and time again, and just from reading Guise's book, I've already made a lot of progress in changing the way I think about context and goal size. This is especially important to people who liked Guise's Minihabits book, because if you are like me, you added some great minihabits, made a lot of progress, and yet still felt somehow whiny and unsatisfied because you were fixated on the external "standardized" major goal. In my case, this meant I made a lot of daily progress in writing a book, but I still felt bad because I didn't have "Publish a book" checked off my imaginary perfectionist list. Why should "publish a book" be the goal? It's too big a chunk to be focusing on right now. I just got lulled into insisting my life wasn't right until this "society-approved" goal was done, and I didn't think any smaller goals or a life of progress could count for anything.
Guise makes a lot of other great points throughout the book, but I don't have time to detail them all! :) I will say that Guise's humor is a plus.
CONS: Because this book was GREAT!, I have mostly nitpicky things to say as cons. The one thing I don't think is nitpicky is that Guise could use a broader group of examples. Nearly all his examples were about exercise, writing, and asking for dates. It is nice to write what you know, but it's also important to know your audience, and I'm sure many of Guise's readers would appreciate seeing how his concepts work for a more varied group of activities and goals (e.g. environmental goals, meetings at work, repairing a broken marriage, childrearing, saving money, investing, volunteering, apologizing, traveling, doing taxes, caring for an elderly person, being sick, getting along with difficult coworkers, etc.). Probably Guise drew from his own experience and those of his friends, but he may need to ask family members or other people of varying demographic groups (age, marital status, etc) to get ideas for more examples. That said, many readers will do fine adapting Guise's examples to their own cases without any trouble. Now for the nitpicky things: I had hoped for a discussion of perfectionism regarding OTHERS' actions, and that never really came up. If your perfectionism takes the form of insisting that others behave in a certain way, should the action steps be any different? (For example, I often let my husband do the dishes, then I obsess about the food gunk that is still on them afterward, and that makes him feel bad.) Are there any complicating features we need to be aware of? Most perfectionists I know do have a problem in interacting with others, because their own need for perfect results makes them micromanage or scold other people. Should this be handled any differently than more personal forms of perfectionism? Would it matter if the relationship is long-term or just a momentary interaction with a stranger? (e.g. "That cashier just bagged my meat with my vegetables!") Most of Guise's examples involve either no interaction with other people (e.g. exercise) or very limited response from others (e.g. you ask for a date, the other person says "yes" or "no.")
Guise also uses the phrase "sunken cost" repeatedly, which I found very awkward. I'm sure "sunken" is better grammar than "sunk cost," but I've only ever heard the phrase "sunk cost," and at some point common use wins out over formalized grammar. It really threw me off trying to read that passage smoothly. Lastly (see how nitpicky I have to be to find flaws?), Guise recommends lying down in public to get over one's fear of social disapproval and says it is harmless. In most places this is probably harmless, but where I lived before (not the U.S.), men actually did this, in order to look up women's skirts. (Often they kept a hand mirror in their pockets for when the angles weren't quite right.) Anyway, just be aware that if you do this, especially if you are male, it may not be perceived as harmless by everybody. Again, probably in most places this won't be an issue.
All in all, this was a fantastic book! The cons were really unimportant, and the pros made this book a delight. I especially appreciated Guise's humorous tone. Occasionally, it would even wax a little poetic, like when he wrote: "It's like seeing a dense fog in the woods: danger may lurk behind it, but the allure of its mystery still draws in the curious ones." Nice! I am really happy that this book was so practical and fun.

Full of great ideas and strategies

This book was full of advice and strategies I could really use and implement daily to improve my perfectionist tendencies! I just finished the book, and I can already feel a paradigm shift happening. I especially love how he organizes the book with the "Application Guide" at the end. All too often, I read a self help book, get excited about the ideas, but then forget what exactly I was supposed to do to make it work in my life. This book allows you to easily reference daily tips to keep these strategies working for you. I also appreciate the author's writing style. When I read it, I feel like I'm having a meaningful conversation with a friend, who is going through the same ups and downs, and trying to figure it all out... who also happens to have some amazing ideas and advice! It is even laugh out loud funny in a few places! Thank you to Stephen Guise... this book will really make a difference in my life!

This book read me

This is a very good book..... I felt it was on the same level with "The Now Habit"... Where you feel like the author really knows what they are talking about and manages to fit important and deep insights into every single page... And read me like a book.

I had to laugh when he mentioned that a perfectionist would try to fix everything all at once with mini habits and fail. I have three times now attempted to take on about 20 mini habits at the same time... I am sure you can guess what happened. And I know I really need to do like 2-3 mini habits... But I get stuck right there since I couldn't decide which few best ones to choose! And the fear of mistakes keeps me from even just picking one and trying... What if I attempt just 1 mini habit and still fail?! Trying to please a specific person keeps me stressed 24/7. I live my life feeling like I am never enough. I go through life dreaming of the great things I can accomplish... too scared to really try anything and fall short of my dreams. THIS BOOK GETS IT. Every detail of it.

Steven has done his research... He manages to unroll the messy ball of perfectionism to allow us to observe the many different aspects and sides to it and then recommend specific and easy ways to combat each. A person who really follows his advice will probably be well onto the path to recovery. This book deserves to become a classic.

I think one of the most helpful perspectives this book offers is its emphasis of "lowering the bar" rather than psyching you up to be able to reach the high bar.

Oh, and one more thing... I thoroughly enjoy the writing style of this book. It is a joy to read.
