Six steps to ward off Alzheimer's

Essential for codgers; read at Mahwah Public Library.

Summary of key points; codgers at my age are very aware of the deadly effects of Alzheimer's, as we see our friends and relatives go away -- although they remain physically present:

STEP 1: Make exercise exciting. You may know that frequent exercise—particularly aerobic exercise, which promotes blood flow to the brain—is the most effective Alzheimer’s prevention strategy. Unfortunately, many people become bored and stop exercising.

Scientific evidence: Because exercise raises levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor, it promotes the growth of new brain cells and may help prevent shrinkage of the hippocampus (a part of the brain involved in memory).

Most days Kosik spends 35 minutes on an elliptical trainer, followed by some weight .training. A recent 20-year study found that dancing reduced dementia risk more than any other type of exercise—perhaps because many types of dancing (such as tango, salsa and Zumba) involve learning new steps and aerobic activity.

STEP 2: Keep your eating plan simple. Emphasize antioxidant-rich foods (such as fruit and vegetables)…not too much red meat…and a limited amount of processed foods that are high in sugar, fat or additives.

Scientific evidence: Research has shown that people who consume more than four daily servings of vegetables have a 40% lower rate of cognitive decline than those who get less than one daily serving.

Kosik tries to eat more vegetables, particularly broccoli, cauliflower and other crucifers, but doesn't like them; he adds brain-healthy spices such as rosemary and turmeric.

STEP 3: Guard your sleep. During the day, harmful waste products accumulate in the brain. These wastes, including the amyloid protein that’s linked to Alzheimer’s, are mainly eliminated at night during deep (stages 3 and 4) sleep.

Scientific evidence: In a long-term Swedish study, men who reported poor sleep were 1.5 times more likely to develop Alzheimer’s than those with better sleep.

Kosik takes 10-minute naps during the day.

STEP 4: Don’t be a loner. Having regular social interaction is strongly associated with healthy aging.

Scientific evidence: Older adults who frequently spend time with others—for example, sharing meals and volunteering—have about a 70% lower rate of cognitive decline than those who don’t socialize much.

Kosik regularly Skypes, attends conferences and stays in touch with other scientists and postdoc students. Get a pet if you can care for it.

STEP 5: Stay calm. People who are often stressed are more likely to experience brain shrinkage.

Scientific evidence: In a three-year study of people with mild cognitive impairment (a condition that often precedes Alzheimer’s), those with severe anxiety had a 135% increased risk for Alzheimer’s, compared with those who were calmer.

Kosik goes for long walks.

Others: Have a positive mental attitude, deep breathing, yoga, tai chi, meditation, watch funny movies.

STEP 6: Push yourself intellectually.

Scientific evidence: In an important study, older adults (including those with a genetic risk factor for Alzheimer’s) who frequently read, played board games or engaged in other mental activities were able to postpone the development of the disease by almost a decade.

But don’t fool yourself — Push your mental abilities—do math problems in your head, memorize a poem, become a tutor, etc.

Kosik does research in Latin America and is learning Spanish.

About the Author
Alex Libby Alex Libby has a background in IT support. He has been involved in supporting end users for almost 20 years in a variety of different environments; a recent change in role now sees Alex working as an MVT test developer for a global distributor based in the UK. Although Alex gets to play with different technologies in his day job, his first true love has always been with the open source movement, and in particular experimenting with CSS/CSS3, jQuery, and HTML5. To date, Alex has written 11 books on subjects such as jQuery, HTML5 Video, SASS, and CSS for Packt, and has reviewed several more. Responsive Web Design with HTML5 and CSS3 Essentials is Alex's twelfth book for Packt, and second completed as a collaboration project.

Gaurav Gupta Gaurav Gupta is a young and budding IT professional and has a good amount of experience of working on web and cross-platform application development and testing. Where's the rest of the book?

As a web developer, I'm always looking for new ideas and better ways of implementing page elements and user experience features. Thus, my decision to check-out this book.

Unfortunately, "Responsive Web Design with HTML5 and CSS3 Essentials", left me disappointed and unsatisfied in this regard. It's clear the authors have a good comprehension of RWD knowledge and know-how but their lack of expanded coverage on the discussed topics coupled with many missing topics makes the book useful for only a small subset of RWD development.

The good...
* The book mainly shines on the coverage of media related web design, both for desktop and mobile. The information on video, pictures, and images is critical for sites where the conveyance of such elements is a large part of site pages. However, this coverage could have been condensed to a single chapter.
* There is also some good, albeit incomplete, coverage of grid and flexbox layouts as well as some examples of page content layout shifts (aka the responsiveness) for different screen sizes and orientations.

The not so good...
* The book is extremely light on actual examples WITH supporting code. Chapter 4, Exploring [CSS] Media Queries, was the least offensive in this regard but I still felt it lacked in cohesiveness. At a minimum, I would have liked to have seen more CSS with supporting screenshots demonstrating topics in action. Taking this a step further, I would have liked to have seen more coverage of element repositioning with diffferent screen sizes especially those using flexbox and index.
* There is some repetitive reuse of figures, especially in regards to break points.
* The use of the term media takes on different meanings throughout the book and the shifting usage can be a distraction.
* I think the book would have been much more useful if they had developed as an example a typical mobile page with standard elements including a hamburger menu, logo and image usage in a confined space, tagline rework or removal on page shrinkage, and floating side menu to access lists or submenus. (I mention the latter because I often find that main content gets shifted so far down the page the user becomes exhausted from constantly scrolling it into view, and then even more infuriated by having to scroll back-up to access a menu or submenu.) In this way, the chapters would have been more cohesive (Chapter 4 would need to be moved forward) and I think examples would have become more natural.

Other coverage that would have made the book a gem, especially for new comers, includes: the use of floating elements for quick page navigation (esp. return to top), affixing the top menu coupled with my other favorite feature, shrink the header on page scroll, and targeting inputs (buttons, radio's, checkbox's) for mobile usage. (I think the latter is often overlooked the most in technical prose. I prefer to completely restyle checkbox's, radio's and even select's for mobile usage. Most users find clicking a stock checkbox input an absolute nuisance on a mobile display (and to an extent on a desktop).) There is also no mention of standards, such as minimum button size (at least 37px or increasing the active touch area), enlarging text size or libraries such as Bootstrap.

In short, I think if the authors were to extend the material on the current topics, cut away some of the fluff and add coverage of other RWD topics, the book would reach a wider audience and be more useful as a reference. Who knows, maybe I should do some book writing of my own.

About the Author
Amy Christine Brown received her PhD from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University in 1986 in the field of Human Nutrition and Foods. She has been a college professor and a registered dietitian with the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics since 1986. Dr. Brown currently teaches at the University of Hawaii's John A. Burns School of Medicine in the Department of Complementary and Alternative Medicine. Her research interests are in the area of bioactive plant substances beneficial to health and medical nutrition therapy. Some of the studies she has conducted include "Diet and Crohn's disease," "Potentially harmful herbal supplements," "Kava beverage consumption and the effect on liver function tests," and "The effectiveness of kukui nut oil in treating psoriasis." Selected research journal publications include: "Position of the American Dietetic Association: functional foods" ("Journal of the American Dietetic Association" ); "The Hawaii Diet: Ad libitum high carbohydrate, low fat multi-cultural diet for the reduction of chronic disease risk factors" ("Hawaii Medical Journal"); "Lupus erythematosus and nutrition: A review" ("Journal of Renal Nutrition"); "Dietary survey of Hopi elementary school students" ("Journal of the American Dietetic Association"); "Serum cholesterol levels of nondiabetic and streptozotocin-diabetic rats" ("Artery"); "Infant feeding practices of migrant farm laborers in northern Colorado" ("Journal of the American Dietetic Association"); "Body mass index and perceived weight status in young adults" ("Journal of Community Health"); "Dietary intake and body composition of Mike Pigg--1988 Triathlete of the Year" ("Clinical Sports Medicine"); and numerous newspaper nutrition columns.

Save money, look for an older edition

I have compared this edition side by side with the 4th edition, and the only update my classmates and I found is the addition of "monk fruit" under alternative sweeteners. Otherwise the paragraphs and charts/graphs are verbatim, with some minimal rearranging. As of now, you can rent the older edition for less than half, so save some money and consider an older edition.

Overall, the book is nothing exciting. All black and white photographs except for a few pages in the centerfold. The text itself is boring and repetitive, but it was required for my course.

As a member of the Gut Microbiota for Health publishing team, she has interviewed dozens of experts on nutrition and the microbiome. A member of the Canadian Science Writers Association, Kristina is co-author of an upcoming academic textbook on nutrition and gut microbiota.



Justin Sonnenburg and Erica Sonnenburg, PhDs, founded and run the Sonnenburg lab in the Department of Microbiology and Immunology at the Stanford University School of Medicine. Justin Sonnenburg received an NIH Director's New Innovator Award in 2009, and Erica Sonnenburg studies the role of diet on the human intestinal microbiota. They are authors of The Good Gut: Taking Control of Your Weight, Your Mood, and Your Long-Term Health.

Well-Researched, Practical Primer on How to Eat in order to Support Good Gut Health!

This book is for you if any of these are true!
- You're looking for a basic lesson in how our guts and the billions of good microbes that reside there work
- You are curious and have heard about the benefits of probiotics but haven't tried them yet
- You're constantly on the go with family commitments, but still want to feed your family in a healthy way that supports good "gut health"
- You have specific gastrointestinal issues and are looking for a long-term solution which focuses on restoring your gut flora (rather than a "quick fix" solution)

The book begins with a very accessible explanation of gut health and the human microbiome (the sum total of the microbial community in and around our body), aka the "gut flora". The author is a scientist but the information is understandable by anyone. Probiotics, prebiotics and the working of the human gut are all explained.

As a scientist, the author is careful not to make any claims beyond what is currently scientifically known. Admittedly, modern science is in the early stages of understanding how this newly discovered "organ" operates within the context of our body.

As a mom, she has made the advice, technique and recipes family- and budget-friendly.

The book provides common sense dietary guidelines on how to work with, restore, and feed your gut flora. She lays a foundation of how to change your habits in order to be most successful, with tips such as "go shopping once a week" and "shop the perimeter" of the supermarket. I think the phased approach for people suffering from ailments is wisely prescribed. The recipes are simple and made from ingredients found at any supermarket. I especially loved the section devoted entirely to fermenting your own foods at home.

The dietary disagreements I have with the author are minor. She advocates unfermented soy products like tofu, eschews saturated animal fats from pastured ruminants, and doesn't address the proper preparation of seeds and grains (soaking, sprouting or fermenting prior to cooking).

These few nitpicks certainly don't take away from the plan's overall usefulness. In fact, the author acknowledges that no two people are exactly the same, and nor should their diets be. She encourages substitutions based on allergies or other preferences.

The WFM cookbook is a wonderful addition to any kitchen bookshelf!

Tastes Great So Far

Unlike some.of the other reviwers, my current diet isn't far off from Campbell's recommendations. I purchased this book because after reading the Sonnenburgs' Good Gut (which this author also recommends if you want more of the science behind her suggestions), I was hungry (wink) for more recipes that focused on veggies, fiber, and fermentation.

Overall, I am very excited to try many of the recipes in this book. The breakfast section goes well beyond steel cut oats and occaional eggs (my usual), adding a few porridge grains that I have yet to try. There are a large number of fish and shellfish recipes, as the author builds off of a Mediterranean diet.

I cannot wait to try out some home fermentation; the directions seem clear, but are a divided between the kitchen tools and tips section and the recipe directions, making me glad I went back and read the rest of the book before trying to make the kefir.

My only big complaint is that there are fewer recipes featuring legumes than I had hoped. I am only doing phase 2, and when it comes to a protein source with lots of fiber and no TMAO, beans are hard to beat. Had the Quinoa and Roasted Vegetable Bowl for dinner, and it was perfect.

A wonderfully diverse selection of healthy recipes with whole foods

Kristina offers full disclosure regarding the state of scientific research about the microbiome - she doesn't attempt to present her phases as cure-alls or substitutions for other therapies, which is refreshing. The information is well laid out and easy to read and comprehend, making it a great introduction to the subject of the health of one's gut.

You'll find seemingly benign vegetables and fruit on the 'avoid' lists, and I found myself VERY interested in what makes these foods less desirable than others. I think I would find it very difficult to follow a regimen if I don't know exactly WHY I shouldn't eat something that seems totally harmless, but I am stubborn and my curiosity demands to be satisfied, so perhaps this is only a minor personal qualm.

I've never even heard of chickpea miso nor did I know it was possible to make miso from chickpeas. I look forward to discovering this food in real-time. The recipes are great and the meal plans offer a LOT of diversity.

One of my issues is with her frequent use of olive to cook with - it is my understanding that olive oil is less stable in cooking and can become rancid quickly. The comment about limiting saturated fat also surprised me because I was under the impression that sat fats were in the clear after the whole "war on butter" was brought into plain view. There was mention of avoiding trans fats but I would have liked more emphasis on this.

I would have appreciate a small section on the importance of soaking beans, legumes and grains. While it does require extra preparation time and effort, I find it well worth it as it offers the dried goods an opportunity to soften and become more digestible.

All in all, this is a great recipe book that offers some information about gut health but lacks details about why specific foods are recommended and others are meant to be avoided (in Phase 1). I will definitely be using some of these recipes at home!
