About the Author

Emory Douglas was the Black Panther Party's Minister of Culture and chief art director for the party's important newspaper for twelve years. In these roles, he gave visual dimension to the party's revolutionary message and mission, broadening the party's impact within a larger cultural framework. Sam Durant is a Los Angeles-based artist. Danny Glover, the accomplished actor, producer, and director best known for his Lethal Weapon movies, attended San Francisco State during the years the Black Panther party was active in the Bay Area. He's credited the party with having a profound influence on both his creative development and political consciousness. Amiri Baraka is a writer and political activist who lives in Newark, New Jersey. Kathleen Cleaver, attorney, author, and senior lecturer at Yale University and Emory Law School, joined the Black Panther Party in 1967. St. Clair Bourne is a veteran filmmaker. Colette Gaiter is an associate professor at the University of Delaware. Greg Morozumi is artistic director of the EastSide Arts Alliance in Oakland, California. Sonia Sanchez is a poet.

VERNACULAR SPECTACULAR!!!!!!!!!

Sometimes when images from newspapers or TV are taken out of context they can fall flat out of meaning or context. Not so for the revolutionary work of Emory Douglas. Douglas who was the Minister of Culture for the Black Panther Party from 1968-1980 and it's weekly newspaper artist amassed more works for the paper in a short period than most artists in a lifetime. But quantity is not the focus here but quality, growth and diversity. Emory Douglas is a prolific artist; his one page pieces included in the Black Panther newspaper were captivating and profoundly moved individuals all over the world no matter what language they spoke. His work has influenced every generation of artists/writers/activists who found their way into his work. It is interesting to note that while Emory's finished work was incredibly elaborate looking his tools of choice were simple pen, marker, tape and paper. His palette always represented and reflected the working class.

Black Panther: The Revolutionary Art of Emory Douglas focuses on many of Emory's best works and includes forward and texts from former Panther Chairman Bobby Seale, Kathleen Cleaver, Amiri Baraka (still NJ Poet-Lauriat in my book)and Danny Glover among a few.

Book is being re-issued in Feb. 2014!

Very glad to see that this book, which should have a much wider audience, is being re-issued by Rizzoli in early 2014. Emory Douglas was a passionate, talented artist. Without his work, the Panthers would have lost one of their best means of communication. He's a hero.

Enjoyable

To get it out of the way, this was not a 224 page paperback. It was a 336 page hardcover. Which made the price much more reasonable. It also comes with a not quite poster size version of the map (player and GM version).

Unlike the other reviewer, I'm not as familiar with M&M. My first exposure was the DC books, and that encouraged me to try this out.

I quite enjoyed the city setting. I'm looking for background and setting, and while there isn't as much as I would have found in say the Shadowrun Seattle book, it's a good value as this is split up between three PDF's (player, GM and adventures).

There are NPC stats that they refer you to other books for, which I'm not a fan of, but other people don't like it when the same NPC is reprinted in 7 books, so can't win that one.

Enjoyed the characters. I can definitely see using a number of them, so big bonus there.

I'm a big fan of pre-written adventures at this point in my life, so happy to have a nice long one.

Art is pretty and full-color.

To me, I see a lot of value here. Would definitely suggest considering, if you want to try a new setting for a superhero game.

Great product

This is a hardcover book that gives you a breakdown on a fictional city set on the western US coast.

I am new to the mutants and masterminds system but not superhero games. So I have a pretty good idea on what to expect with a supplement.

The book has an adventure for up to 8 heros that are starting out. It does a good job at creating an event which can either make the players or they can be established heroes responding to the event. Whichever way the players go about it works great for bringing the team together. The adventure itself is a great jump off point to anyone that is new to this genre of rpg. Veteran players will still enjoy it too.

The book does a wonderful job at establishing the different areas of the city and it really tries to make the reader believe it could be a real place.

I know a lot of GMs like to create everything from scratch. But this book does a great job at making even prebuilt ideas take shape into something better.

The book even provides premade heroes if they don't feel comfortable making brand new ones yet.

My one flaw I found was the book has many points that reference other books. Granted the majority of them are to the rule book.

Overall I would say it is worth the price and a great addition to the GM guide for this game.

Bit of a train wreck

Okay, so I'll preface by saying that I'm a fan of M&M 3E & to a lesser degree a fan of the Freedom City setting, but this was a bit of a train wreck.

So in general the book suffered from misplaced zeal: It was so busy trying to tell us about all the things that aren't at all interesting to a superhero campaign setting that things like "actual information the players may have a use for" is sadly skimmed over.

To much of the pertinent information for the setting is in the adventure line, rather than in the setting books, which means that information is skipped entirely from chapters that information should be found in.

ARTWORK
One of my biggest issues with it is the artwork, which shares flaws with the writing.... Its not so much that the artwork is bad so much as its misused & quite often dull. An by that I mean that is you have dozens of b-roll images of buildings, an people, an images that could have been taken from a university guide book, but only a single clear image of Tellex & its not even in the section talking about Tellex: Its the visual equivalent of burying the leed. That really should have been your icon opening image, just like Freedom Cities opening image was the Freedom League floating in front of the Centurion Statue, its second image was the Claremont class shot & its third was the city as seen from the bridge, with the centurion statue being front and centre... For us those images have become icons of Freedom City.

An it doesn't stop at Tellax, there's also things like Victory Squadron image.... Instead of every character getting an image, or there being a dynamic group shot, what we get is a picture of a picture of a group shot, at a terrible angle & to small to make out clear details from. Apparently a major part of the cities super heroic legacy wasn't quite as visually important in a super hero campaign setting book as a generic image of a shopping mall (an image that took up half a page).

NARRATIVE & INFORMATIVE CONTENT
An this misplaced zeal is not just evident in the artwork its also evident in the writing: The book goes into great depth on things like the commission on heritage buildings, it gives us entire multi paragraph write ups for unimportant government functionaries, entire side bars about business and industry (that made no point), but then gives us less than 4 lines per entry for any member of the Victory Squadron & no stats.

An that was one of the big issues with the book. The city has a major super event occur & that caused a jump in super powered individuals, but that's NOT what this book is about. This book focuses on the aspects of the city from BEFORE that happened & since the general concept was "a city without superheroes" all the villains in the book are from the "pretending we aren't really here" & "a conspiracy of secrets" type of characters, which is entirely to dull for a super hero game.

In comic book terms, this is like creating a source book for the city of Dakota from the Milestone universe, where instead of mentioning Icon or Static, or the Big Bang, I instead presented you with a book that went into great detail on who the fire chief is & whose obsession is preserving the local park.

An yet that's exactly what Emerald City presented us with.

MODULES
This brings us to the modules, which I'm going to keep short. While high on style, they are short on content: There are just to many instances of non-consequence encounters, failing upwards, not enough story links between modules, players not being able to make any meaningful choices (its completely passive, rather than active), atleast one of the modules is predicated entirely on players making a single choice players might not make & no alternative if they don't make it & finally, way to many incidences of scene transitions being nothing more than "and then a villain shows up where you are to fight you."

The upside to the modules is that the art & writing is less airy-fairy, which is good, but the down side is that the maps look rough & constantly forgot to add any kind of scale, so you can't tell if a building is a flat 1 story building with a roof top that's 100 feet long, or if its a 40 story building that is 60 feet long.

CONCLUSION
So in conclusion this product as a whole has some major issues, issues that could have been minimised entirely in this humble readers estimation by having a single well defined artistic vision of what they wanted the city to be, rather than a list of things they wanted it NOT to be. An then when that was achieved, a solid guiding hand by an editor, overseeing the entire project. Because this book reads more like someone had a rough idea, didn't flesh it out & told a whole group of people to go write articles about this new city, which then got meshed together to form an ill defined city narrative.

An if I can make an observation on the art side: Stop ordering art before you know what art you are going to want & how you plan on setting it out. This has been an issue with a lot of your recent output: You end up with 60% of your artwork being b-roll, 47% being "character jumping from no where" group shots & the last 3% being of new things that people would actually want to see images of.... You need to invert the amount of "things we actually want to see" with the "b-roll" amount.

Sorry guys, as much as I love your system & your universe in general, this book was below par.

It's a different medium.

The people who scoff at McCarthy, this book specifically, don't seem to understand his style. It's not that they're wrong to call it "hard to read" and "plotless". And I'm not trying to sound pretentious here. I agree with them semantically. It is not an easy to read piece, a normal article of literature that follows a smooth plot curve with complex, developing characters. It also isn't even cryptic poetry. I honestly think it's simpler than that. In the few interviews, and instances where he has been directly quoted, he explains it -- he's a naturalistic writer. He's simply narrating every second of a life in a real world. No one -- not him, not the characters, not us -- knows the plot. There is no plot in life. And his writing is very straight forward and flowing --"The judge walked." "They crossed the western edge of the playa." He's just taking you on a visual journey. And it's all a terrifyingly vivid journey, as close to reality as you can get. That's the beauty of it. Almost all literature distorts reality in some way for the sake of the "story" and what is supposed to be included in it. But real life is not a piece of literature. McCarthy captures real life. And it doesn't surprise me that he says his best friends are not writers but scientists. He hates writers. His idea of literature is almost that of scientific observation of humanity, and humanity's story is a strange and animalistic one, not some blocky cartoon.
I can tell you that I don't like his stuff for the same reasons as anyone else. I'm not going to sit and read it for the same reason I would read a non-fiction narrative or something. Life is short and you can't always devote hours of your time slogging through such a vivid record of one characters life, only to find no meaning at the end. But sometimes I want to, and I have to applaud McCarthy on being one of the only people who can open that door in the world of literature.

A Brilliant Psychedelic Western!

Cormac McCarthy's absolutely brilliant Psychedelic western, Blood Meridian, is the pinnacle of extreme gore and brutally honest anti-hero westerns!
Poetic and stark, this book moves briskly from chapter to chapter with the swiftness of a Bowie knife slicing through throats and the pugilistic thud of two thumbs pressed into eye sockets plucking two marbled eyeballs from a living human's skull.
This is one of the best and last books on the West that need to be transmogrified into cinematic form. Oh what an absolutely stunning film someone could make from this terror tale.
One can taste the arrid dry climate, and thick viscous blood while reading this book. Purely visual and yet totally almost impossible to film; at least in any traditional cinematic form. Perhaps a truly talented filmmaker could turn this truly bloody story into one helluva masterful mini-series. One part Deadwood, one part Sam Peckinpah; but always pure McCarthy. This is a stunning and haunting book.

A challenging and worthwhile read

Rarely, okay, never have I read a book which is so simultaneously abhorrent and appealing. Blood Meridian is a book that treats violence as a commonplace occurrence, and offers little respite in its continual assault on all (or anything, please anything) that is good in the world. The prose is stark, direct, and often undefinable (perhaps somewhere, but I often found words for which no definition can be found). The novel immerses you in a world of evil and violence far more terrifying than any post-apocalyptic book can create. And this, indeed, is how I came to this “masterwork” by Cormac McCarthy (bio). I’ve read a few of his novels, and consider “The Road” (blogged about here) one of my all time favorite novels.

This novel centers around “the kid” in the 1850s as he travels from his home state of Tennessee and joins up with the Glanton Gang, a real-life group of killers (there are probably more appropriate terms, but I’m calling them what they are) led by John Joel Glanton. Hired by the Mexican government to fight off attacking Native Americans, they killed any Native American they could since they were paid by the scalp. Women, children, unarmed men — it makes no difference. Even non-Native Americans were not exempt for their depravity as all of humanity appears to be at their disposal. What makes McCarthy’s descriptions so unnerving is the calmness and detachment used in describing the killings. You can almost read through some of them before the horror of what is happening dawns on you. I’m reminded of Tim O’Brien’s writing about the My Lai massacre during the American war in Vietnam. In the Lake of the Woods is a novel about a politician later found to have been involved in the massacre. But the most disturbing part of the book is not the fiction, but a chapter of excerpts from the actual court-martial records. What you see is this same dispassionate account of brutal abuse and killing. As if the event itself is not horrific enough, the presenting of it as a normal occurrence makes it even worse.

McCarthy’s prose is powerful. It can edge on the dramatic, and at times tips into the over-dramatic category, but its power is clear.

"Under a gibbous moon horse and rider spanceled to their shadows on the snowblue ground and in each flare of lightning as the storm advanced those selfsame forms rearing with a terrible redundancy behind them like some third aspect of their presence hammered out black and wild upon the naked grounds. They rode on."

The phrase, “they rode on,” is the perfect balance to that long, intricate preceding sentence. Language like his can be hard to follow in our quick read society, but a slow and thoughtful read pays off. Plus, he reminds you of the beauty of words (and perhaps I just tipped into the over-dramatic category).

While “the kid” is the anti-hero of this anti-western, it is the Judge who stands out as the most memorable character. A large, hairless, white man, he is often naked and always calm. He appears to be waiting for others as they come to him, and his intellect puts him ahead of both enemies and his fellow travelers. He makes observations in his notebook in order to understand and thus control the world, and is given to long, fascinating discourses on a variety of topics. He is both God-like and devil-like, omniscient and monstrous, and terrifying in his outreach.

Toward the end of the book “the kid” faces off with judge, the culmination of a relationship in which they dance around one another throughout the book.

"The judge smiled. He spoke softly into the dim mud cubicle. You came forward, he said, to take part in a work. But you were a witness against yourself. You sat in judgement on your own deeds. You put your own allowances before the judgments of history and you broke with the body of which you were pledge a part and poisoned it in all its enterprise. Hear me, man. I spoke in the desert for you and you only and you turned a deaf ear to me. If war is not holy man is nothing but antic clay."

It is as if “the kid” recognizes his role in evil, and by the recognition (for there is no repentance) he has broken the fabric of their community. He recognizes the judge as the one behind the evil, but he cannot separate himself. As the judge says, “What joins men together is not the sharing of bread but sharing of enemies.”

Clearly, this is a disturbing novel. The fact that McCarthy bases this on historical occurrences does not allow us to write this off as some post-apocalyptic fantasy. Instead, we have to face the judge and his comments about our own culpability in human affairs.

About the Author

Leslie Collier was from 1978 to 1986 Professor of Virology at the London Hospital Medical College, being succeeded in this post by John Oxford. John Oxford is Professor of Virology at St. Bartholomew's and The Royal London School of Medicine and Dentistry at the University of London. He is the co-author of two standard texts on Influenza and Virology and has published 250 scientific papers throughout the world. Professor Oxford serves as the Scientific Director of Retroscreen, Ltd., the College's research virology company.

Best book available for intro virology

As a virology student, this is the first place I go to when reviewing any viral disease. It gets to the point and gives you all the necessary information you need on viruses. For all the common viruses, this book has no equal. Other books do go into more detail, but nothing comes close to Collier to giving you the basic knowledge you need.

I was required to read this for a Public Health course. The textbook skips over vital explanations, uses too many abbreviations (without explaining what they are), and bolds important words without defining them. I was constantly on the computer attempting to find a better explanation elsewhere. However, I guess I should fault the professor of my course more than the textbook authors. Perhaps this book should have a memo explaining it is only for those with an advanced understanding of microbiology and medicine.

Amano is nothing if not inspiring

I think Amano's critics tend to overlook the fact that he is a photographer, not a botanist or icthyologist. Even though his technical skills and knowledge of his craft are profound and probably rival, if not exceed, some of the "experts" in the field, he is first and foremost an artist.
An exceptional artist.
He has taken his love and respect of nature, reduced it to it's essentials and fleshed it out with a personal, subtle spirituality that is conveyed in all of his books, and this one is no exception.....
....as long as you can overlook the typos and printing errors.
I don't understand why the publisher would spend the money for spot gloss and good stock, yet overlook glaring alignment and spelling errors, but as previously mentioned by other reviewers, this book does seem hastily put together. It's not horrid though, and unfortunately it seems that all Japanese books translated for the American market suffer in much the same way, regardless of their genre.
If you are looking for in-depth technical how-to's and plant information, you will not find it here. However, it's obvious that was not what this book was intended to be in the first place, so it seems unfair to hold it up to that standard.
Despite the poor translation and the brevity of the technical information, I think this book can come in handy for the beginning aquatic plant enthusiast, and is a nice low-cost introduction to Takashi Amano. This book emphasizes smaller tanks with smaller, easy-to-keep fish (mostly), gives a broad overview of each tank and provides the basic groundwork for providing a pleasing tank layout. All this in 64 pages for $...- not bad, especially considering that it's more of an art book than a technical manual in the first place.
If this book was more expensive, I'd be harsher in my review of it. However, I think for the price, it certainly delivers.

Worth the price

This book is a bridge between the dazzling "Nature Aquarium World" series and the how-to books. About a dozen Amano tanks are presented, some with pictures from multiple angles. A short description of each tank then follows, including a diagram of the tank layout, plants and fish species and other facts. Included are short sections on how to design and put together a planted tank, and various other tidbits about fishkeeping in general.
The images are very good, but I found some diagram legends confusing--perhaps a result of the translation. The book isn't perfect, but is a good source of inspiration for beginners who cannot afford the more expensive though much more awe-inspiring "Nature Aquarium World" books. It also gives a little more insight into how Amano puts together his tanks. For the small cost, it is worth every penny.

Nature Aquarium World Lite

I purchased "Aquarium Plant Paradise" having seen it previously, so I knew what I was in for. As mentioned in other reviews, the editing and translation is anemic. Nomenclature can be inaccurate, typos are a recurring theme, photo and text alignment is off and adherence to basic page margins is lackluster. Technically, this is not a book that holds up under scrutiny. It's an English edition that looks like it was hastily assembled to generate a lower price point for those unwilling to dig deeper for the "Nature Aquarium World" volumes.
If you're looking for a classic that stands the test of time, this probably isn't it. If you want a few more Amano arrangements to examine and learn from, "Aquarium Plant Paradise" does the job nicely. Mr. Amano's photographs are the foundation of this publication, as they are for the each of the "Nature Aquarium World" entries; the translated text is perhaps secondary. Each aquascape is created with care and talent that is his trademark, and examining the arrangements offers an education all its own.

After reading Irv's book, I realized how much I didn't know about interviewing. -- Captain with regional carrier.

Has taught interviewing courses at the University of California Extension programs, and other colleges across the country. Also taught interviewing techniques to pilots at military bases, flight schools, and pilot job fairs. Holds Bachelors degree in psychology / personnel / business management.

Extremely informative information for future airline pilots

As stated above, extremely informative information for the future ailine pilot to be. This book is very easy to read, clear and concise. Irv gets right to the point on all his topics whether it would be writing the cover letter and resume to what color suit to wear to the interview. There is definitely an experience factor that went into writing this very short book.

A must buy for the on-going airline hiring boom.

No book style format

This book in Kindle format lacks many "normal" Kindle book features like table of contents, chapter separation, etc. It's like reading a non-stop word document.
