The sweetest thing

It is not very likely that George Bernard Shaw knew he was writing the play that would become one of the seminal romantic comedies of the 20th when he penned `Pygmalion'. The play is delightful, with borrowed elements from many genres. There is comedy and romance, above all, but there is also a very clear social critic -- and even a Marxist idea of class struggle. What only enhances the reading of this masterpiece.
Professor Henry Higgins is a linguistic expert who is much more interested in how people say the words rather than what they say. He ends up taking a bet that he is able to transform a simple cockney flower seller, Eliza, into a sophisticated and refined young lady, who would be able to fool the Queen herself. To succeed in such a move he claims he will change only the way she speaks.
To work on Eliza he puts her up in his house and starts polishing her speech. This is not an easy job, because what the girl speaks is not English, but a language she has developed herself. After some time, the Professor decides to introduce her to a group of friends, without mentioning her backgrounds. At first the meeting is blast. Although Eliza can use a fine language it is clear she has not backgrounds to develop and keep up a conversation. And her behavior ends up being the laughing stock. But one of the guests notices how beautiful the girl is. Higgins feels sort of jealous and this could lead their relationship to another level.
Shaw's prose is funny and touching at the same time. He uses devices, like everybody speaking at the same time, which only enhances the fun of the play and brings more truth to the action. His characters are lively and well developed. His social critic is evident. Eliza doesn't want to be rich or sound as such, she only wants to get a better job in a flower store, in other words, she only wants to be what she is. But the Professor insists on making her another person, very different from what she really is. Eliza's presence is the sweetest thing in the play. She is a nice and good-hearted girl, who suffers the consequence of her surroundings.
The play is based on the Greek tragedy `Pygmalion and Galatea', and was the base for one of the most famous musicals of the cinema, `My Fair Lady'.

Involving Glimpse Into Ibsen's Theater Of Pain

At the core of Henrik Ibsen's art lay a bottomless talent for investigating the way people hurt one another. But reading his "Four Major Plays" is not painful at all; rather, they are thrilling and even delightful for the different ways the playwright captures and sustains our interest.

"A Doll's House" (1879) the first play here, presents the story of Nora Helmer, a seemingly childlike housewife with a weakness for macaroons whose actual level of devotion to her husband and family is kept hidden until the threat of scandal exposes her to a surprisingly judgmental spouse.

Shocking in its day for questioning then-traditional domestic roles, "A Doll's House" makes its best points in its handling of Nora's character and an abrupt conclusion that still startles. If there are touches of excessive melodrama, and I think there are, they are more than compensated for by Ibsen's deft touch in drawing out the suffocating hypocrisy of social norms.

Even more of an attack on society, "Ghosts" (1881) is that much more melodramatic, too much so for my tastes. Incest, social disease, people living together out of wedlock - it's like Ibsen wanted to cram every shocking thing he could think of into one play, and finish it off with something more shocking still. Convoluted but never boring, "Ghosts" makes its points, dares you to judge, and leaves a mark.

What makes this book indispensible for lovers of good drama are the last two plays, each brilliant in a totally different way. "Hedda Gabler" (1890) is the tale of a woman's moral and mental meltdown told in four gripping acts. Title character Hedda is newly married, but full of spite for the settled life, seeking to cause misery wherever she can.

"Oh, you know how it is...these things just suddenly come over me," she explains to an oily confidant. "And then I can't resist them." You can't, either. Her twisted path causes much heartache and pain, and some surprising moments of humor for those basing their impression of Ibsen on the previous, more dour plays. Hedda's a terrifically dark, unsettling character, like Richard III in a petticoat.

Though it's hard to call anything better than "Hedda Gabler" for pure rotten fun, "The Master Builder" (1892) works even better at teasing out a rather convoluted concept, that of will to power, in an accessibly dramatic way. To risk another Shakespeare comparison, it's like a twisted take on "The Tempest". The title character, Halvard Solness, is tortured by the guilt of his success, and the sense his accomplishment has been sped along by "devils" both good and bad. Add to the equation a longtime admirer of Solness who dares him to challenge fate more boldly.

It's hard to imagine a story like this working in anyone else's hands, but Ibsen does it with masterful subterfuge, teasing out the main story in the form of a seeming subplot while the story which begins the play recedes into the background. Nothing goes the way you expect it, except perhaps the ending, which Ibsen manages to make feel like destiny. Even the characters are a complex group, Solness alternately megalomaniacal and sympathetic.

Ibsen's great reputation is fully justified in this deep, complex, yet surprisingly accessible volume.

Superb

For non-experts in the subject (such as this reviewer), this book gives a fascinating overview of organisms that have challenged humankind's domination of this planet. Although the book is targeted toward students and biologists, anyone who has a keen interest in virology will gain much from its perusal. Packed with diagrams, and containing hundreds of references, readers should have no problems in assimilating the information in the book, even though it is quite sizable. I only read chapters 1, 2, 5, 6, and 13 (due only to time constraints and not because the other chapters were deemed unimportant) so my review will be confined to listing some of the interesting facts and helpful features of the book.

These include: 1. The discussion on the history of virology, especially the discussion on D'Herelle's dream and Koch's postulates. The early years of virology are impressive given that viruses could not be seen at the time due to the lack of suitable microscopes. 2. The actual number of species of viruses is 1550, with 2404 tentative species. 3. The methods by which the different viruses were identified experimentally, such as cell cultures and recombinant DNA technology. 4. The methods for measuring the infectivity of viruses. 5. The method of fluctuation analysis for measuring spontaneous mutation rates in viruses. The difference in spontaneous mutation rates between DNA and RNA viruses is astonishing. The authors point out the ability of RNA viruses to exist as "quasi-species", being capable of very rapid adaptation because of the high spontaneous mutation rate. 6. The simple replication abilities of RNA viruses, which although very error prone, results in very rapid evolutionary response. 7. In plant viruses, the existence of genome segments that are frequently packaged in distinct virions, which results in the need for several viruses to co-infect in order to transmit infectivity. 8. Viral RNA genomes are very rich and contain nearly every structural variation possible. 9. The role of horizontal gene transfer in producing the antigenic shifts that produce new pandemic strains of influenza. 10. The ability of cells to counteract virus infections by using gene silencing or the interferon system. Some viruses have evolved mechanisms for evading these defenses. 11. The replication strategies for DNA viruses, and the mechanisms that have evolved to evade host defenses. 12. Viral DNA replication is initiated by using proteins as primers. 13. The ability of viruses to evade host defenses by withdrawing into a latent state. Only a few proteins are expressed when the virus is in this latent state. The authors encourage the reader to pursue research into the mechanisms that are behind the initiation and release from latency, since at the time of writing these mechanisms are not well understood. 14. Gene therapy, certainly the most fascinating of all topics in virology and genetic engineering. 15. The role of self-inactivating (SIN) vectors in enhancing the safety of viral vectors.

Author Erik Larson imbues the incredible events surrounding the 1893 Chicago World's Fair with such drama that readers may find themselves checking the book's categorization to be sure that The Devil in the White City is not, in fact, a highly imaginative novel. Larson tells the stories of two men: Daniel H. Burnham, the architect responsible for the fair's construction, and H.H. Holmes, a serial killer masquerading as a charming doctor. Burnham's challenge was immense. In a short period of time, he was forced to overcome the death of his partner and numerous other obstacles to construct the famous "White City" around which the fair was built. His efforts to complete the project, and the fair's incredible success, are skillfully related along with entertaining appearances by such notables as Buffalo Bill Cody, Susan B. Anthony, and Thomas Edison. The activities of the sinister Dr. Holmes, who is believed to be responsible for scores of murders around the time of the fair, are equally remarkable. He devised and erected the World's Fair Hotel, complete with crematorium and gas chamber, near the fairgrounds and used the event as well as his own charismatic personality to lure victims. Combining the stories of an architect and a killer in one book, mostly in alternating chapters, seems like an odd choice but it works. The magical appeal and horrifying dark side of 19th-century Chicago are both revealed through Larson's skillful writing. --John Moe

This is a steady performance of a book that, while gripping in its content and crisply paced, isn't quite a gold mine for an audio performer. It relies on journalistic narration and includes almost no quotes, so there isn't much chance for interesting characterization. But it is excellent nonfiction, chronicling the hurly-burly planning and construction of the 1893 Chicago World's Fair (which did, as the title suggests, include building what amounted to an entire city) and a cruelly calculating sociopath who used the event's tumult and crowds to serve his homicidal compulsion. Goldwyn is an experienced narrator with a keen dramatic sense, and his resonant voice is well-suited to the project. Music is used only sparingly, but the few subdued, creepy bars Goldwyn reads over in the beginning do an excellent job of creating atmosphere for a tale that is subtle but often genuinely unsettling. Listeners will also be fascinated by descriptions of the sheer logistics of the fair itself, which serve as not only carefully crafted and informative history, but also as welcome breaks from the macabre and relentless contrivances of the killer. In all, it's a polished presentation of an intriguing book that outlines the heights of human imagination and perseverance against the depths of our depravity.

*Starred Review* Larson's ambitious, engrossing tale of the Chicago World's Fair of 1893 focuses primarily on two men: Daniel H. Burnham, the architect who was the driving force behind the fair, and Henry H. Holmes, a sadistic serial killer working under the cover of the busy fair. After the 1889 French Exposition Universel wowed the world with the Eiffel Tower and high attendance numbers, interest began to grow in the U.S. for a similar fair. Chicago and New York were the top contenders for the location, and in February 1890, Chicagoans were overjoyed to hear they had won the honor. Burnham and his partner, John Root, the leading architects in Chicago, were tapped for the job, and they in turn called on Frederick Law Olmstead, Louis Sullivan, and Richard M. Hunt to help them build the world's greatest fair. They faced overwhelming obstacles: inhospitable weather, bureaucracy, illness, and even death. Unbeknownst to any of them, Holmes, a charismatic, handsome doctor, had arrived in the city and built a complex with apartments, a drugstore, and a vault, which he used to trap his victims until they suffocated. When the White City opened for business in May 1893, hundreds of thousands of people flocked to it, although a plummeting economy and several accidents did nothing to help business. A shocking murder concludes the ultimately successful fair, and that's before Holmes claims his final victims in the cruelest act of his career. A magnificent book. Kristine Huntley

Disappointing

There was much detail about the Chicago Worlds Fair, but very little about the first documented serial killer in America, Herman Webster Mudgett (Dr. Henry Howard Holmes). There was little detail in the book about this man, his life, his crimes and his particular brand of psychopath. He was an extremely interesting monster that was treated almost as an afterthought to the main subject of the fair. He should have been the main focus of the story and the fair used as a backdrop to his crimes. H. H. Holmes was not like any other serial killer. He was and still is the nebulous monster in the shadows we all fear. In short, if you are thinking this book is about a serial killer gathering his victims during the Chicago Worlds Fair, you are wrong. It is about the Fair being secretly used by a prolific serial killer to satisfy his bloodlust. The movie based on this book is supposed to release next year. I can only hope it gives Dr. Holmes and his crimes center stage and delves into who and what he really was as far as pure psychopaths can be. Having said that, the book was well written and quite interesting. I gave it 3 stars only for this reason. If the author had made a much greater effort to 'flesh-out' Holmes and make him the focus of the book instead of the fair I might have felt five stars had been earned.

I loved this book

Where to start? I loved this book! *May contain spoilers* This novel was filled with history, challenges, hope, and murder. The writing began slowly but drew me in after getting past the first couple chapters. However, those chapters were key for setting the scene and getting to know each character (as all books do). The description of how the Fair came to be, was built, and impacted Chicago was fascinating. During the building of the Fair my favorite part was guessing what item became their "master work" to outshine Eiffel's Tower. I was not familiar with Chicago's Fair or it's background before this book, the final piece chosen was a fun mystery to guess as the architects also worked to discover it. The portions of the novel regarding H.H. Holmes and the murders he partook in were sickening. Had Holmes' history not been included into the novel I would have found the Fair alone to be less engaging. I think this portion kept me drawn in and wondering how he would be caught. The author's references and notes towards the end of the book are extensive. This is another piece that made me love this novel. His research provided endless historical proof to create the flowing piece he created. It was hard at times to remember this was based on real events because the events related to Holmes were gut wrenching. Something a fictional character, a bad guy would do. The challenges the architects encountered before and after the Fair was built were rough. They placed so much hope into the Fair changing the world's view of Chicago that it almost destroyed them. Their health, families and happiness were greatly impacted. I hope to reread this novel many times. I feel I learned so much, but missed a lot as well. With so much information packed into the story I bet a second or third read will benefit me in catching something I missed. Definitely a five out of five star. Recommending to everyone I know. A new favorite!

Two stories juxtaposed around the 1893 Chicago Columbian Exposition, that of the gifted young creator, architect Daniel Burnham, who designed and built the breathtakingly beautiful White City, and psychotic destroyer H. H. Holmes, the serial killer who took advantage of the draw of the White City to victimize young woman visitors to Chicago. Both stories are riveting, covering in detail the labors of each man, one struggling to build the White City itself and the other a "hotel" near the fair grounds, designed to make efficient the murder and disposal of young visitors. In between, you're treated to the spectacle of watching an entire major city being designed and built, skyscraper by skyscraper, on the ashes of a fire that swept through and destroyed the old city two decades prior. You don't have to be a Chicagoan to find this book hard to put down and impossible to forget. One of the best books I've ever read.

She was still in diapers when she brought her first dog home. The dog was an Irish Wolf Hound and was taller than her. Riding her first mule and owning her first horse fueled her interest in the West. The roots of “Six Women West” can also be found in the author’s strong interest in Western movies. She and her husband spent 4 years walking across the US 1985. Along the way they also walked the Oregon Trail and the knowledge from this journey is central to “Six Women West”. They also visited historical sites including plantation houses and slave quarters. With encouragement from fellow writers, she began writing the novel that kept running through her mind. "Six Women West" will be the first in a series of books that follows the unfolding of the lives of 6 fascinating, engaging and courageous women. Today, Wanda and her husband periodically travel to the Oregon coast.

I hated to see the story coming to an end

Six Women West was a thoroughly enjoyable book. I became involved in the characters lives. I hated to see the story coming to an end. Highly recommend for history content.
Each of the characters has a story about how they came to go west. The book showed us how impossible a woman alone during the Civil Wars survival was. But six women together could survive.

This was a great story, and I hated for it to end

This was a great story, and I hated for it to end. The characters were very well developed, and I love historical fiction, and cannot imagine crossing the country in a covered wagon, with all the trials and tribulations they faced on a daily basis. Also, the part of the story that had women going hunting on horseback was great. I guess I would starve if I had to hunt in order to eat. All the women were brave, and strong, but with a wonderful vulnerability and resourcefulness as well. If you love this genre, I highly recommend!

Old West anyone?

This book was awesome! Where is book two? I miss the characters already!!! Haven't come across a book this good in a long time!
I've often read reviews that stated that they felt they were "there" in the book...now I know what they meant! I loved this book! Love the competent women and their love of animals!
Dang what am I gonna read now? Durn. Please write more. I''ll be waitin'.
